Steve Bohen '79 was the 2022 Distinguished Service Award recipient. A native of Erie, Bohen graduated from Gannon with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Communication Arts. He continued his education by receiving a Master of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from "The" Ohio State in 1982. He joined Gannon University as an instructor of Communications Arts and served as the director of the campus radio station starting in 1982. Bohen was well known within the GU department of athletics and served the department in a couple different roles. He was the play-by-play announcer for Gannon basketball from 1984-88 and took over as the school's Sports Information Director in 1987, where he served in the role until 1988. He called the action as Gannon advanced to the 1987 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship Game. He was a friend and mentor to many people who went on to broadcasting careers in Erie and across the country. Bohen remained actively involved with Gannon Athletics for decades later, serving as a basketball play-by-play announcer on 90.5 WERG and as the emcee of the Gannon Athletics Hall of Fame banquet.
