Mel Witherspoon '68 (Men's Basketball) averaged a double-double during his two-year career at Gannon with 11.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. The two-year team captain transferred to Gannon from Scottsbluff (Neb.) Junior College, before recording 537 points and 522 rebounds in two seasons as a Golden Knight.
The Newark, N.J., native still ranks third all-time at Gannon in career rebounding average. Witherspoon is 22nd all-time at Gannon in career rebounds, but ranked fourth upon graduation. His 12.5 rebounding average and 300 rebounds in 1964-65 represent the seventh-highest and 13th-highest single-season totals in school history. Both marks ranked fourth upon graduation.
