Hall of Fame
John Boyles '87 (Baseball) is one of two baseball student-athletes to be inducted into the Gannon Athletics Hall of Fame this year. He was a three-year letterwinner under legendary head coach Ivan George in the early 1980's. The pitching standout was drafted in the 17th round of the 1982 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft by the New York Mets, producing a 44-37 career record in six minor league seasons. He went 12-1 with a 2.41 earned run average while pitching for the Little Falls Mets in 1983 and finished 15-5 with a 2.85 ERA as a member of the Cedar Rapids Reds in 1985.
The Tionesta, Pa., native reached the Double-A level, before an arm injury ended his career. Boyles was later hired to be the pitching coach for the Cedar Rapids Reds. After being drafted by the New York Mets, he kept a promise made to Coach George and continued his education at Gannon for four semesters before earning his degree in 1987.
