No. 21 Gannon Women's Basketball Team Falls to Bowie State in Tournament Action

Senior Julie Kleber netted a career-high 21 points in Gannon's 70-52 loss to Bowie State.

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season on Wednesday evening coming up on the short end of 70-52 score against Bowie State during the first day of play at the Lady Bulldog Classic.

The Lady Knights lost the battle on the inside against Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs out-rebounded Gannon by a 40-30 margin. The Lady Bulldogs scored 44 of their 70 points in the paint compared to just 10 for Gannon. Bowie state was also propelled by 28 points off the bench. 

For the third time this season Gannon's opening bucket came from a long-range shot from Caitlyn Lowe (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg). The junior guard also scored the opening basket against both Urbana and Northwood this season. 

The lead would change hands five times over the first eight minutes before Bowie State put together an 8-2 run that gave them a six-point lead with 10:42 left in the half.

Gannon responded with a pair of buckets from Danielle Tucker (Rochester, N.Y. / East) but the Lady Bulldogs again stretched the lead to six with a Brittney Jackson three-point basket. a pair of free throws from Lakisha Walker would give Bowie State the largest lead of the half, 26-18 with 4:26 left.

Lowe would hit a three, followed by an Amanda Dacek (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Berea) bucket to cut the lead to three but the Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the final 30 seconds to put the score at 30-23 going into the break.

Gannon would open the scoring in the second half with a three-point basket from Dacek but would allow Bowie State to score three straight times in the paint to lead by 10. Bowie State was able to halt any hope of a Gannon rally in the second half after using a 10-3 run over a four minute span to lead by a 65-48 score with 2:16 left to play.

A final bucket from Joanna Murray would give Bowie State its largest lead of the night and put the final score at 70-52.

Gannon shot just 35 percent from the field including finishing just 10-of-32 in the second half. Bowie State shot 51 percent from the field including 37.5 percent from behind the arc.

Gannon was led by Julie Kleber's (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) career-high 21 points and was the only Lady Knight to reach double-digit scoring. The senior also added four assists, three rebounds and a steal.

Lowe finished with nine points, taking all 11 of her shots from behind the three-point line. Jessie Tamerlano (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) chipped in seven points with two rebounds and a steal. Tucker grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, including five off the offensive glass.

Bowie State was led by a trio of 12-point performances from Jackson, Walker and Teaunsha Robinson. There were just 15 free throws in the contest with Gannon attempting none in the first half and Bowie State missing both of its chances in the second half.

Gannon falls to 4-2 on the season while Bowie State now sits at 3-3. Gannon will take on Virginia Union tomorrow, Thursday, December 30 at 6 p.m. to conclude tournament action. The Panthers lost to Ferris State 69-43 earlier in the day.
