INDIANA, Pa. – The No. 5 Gannon women's basketball team opened NCAA Atlantic Regional play with a 76-61 victory over Edinboro on Friday afternoon inside the Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Complex.
The Golden Knights came out firing, opening the game on an 11-0 run and holding Edinboro scoreless for more than three minutes to begin the contest.
Edinboro battled back in the second quarter and briefly took its first lead of the game at 26-25, but Gannon responded before halftime to regain control.
Coming out of the break, the Golden Knights delivered their strongest stretch of the game, using a 28-14 third quarter to pull away and build a double-digit lead.
Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) led Gannon with 21 points, adding eight rebounds in the win.
Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) contributed 15 points and four steals, while
Jordan Popyk (Novi, Mich./Novi) recorded eight points and eight rebounds.
Claxon's performance marked a career-high against Edinboro, surpassing her previous best of 16 points set during her freshman season.
Gannon shot 47.5 percent from the field, knocking down 8-of-21 three-pointers while finishing 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Knights also forced Edinboro into 23 turnovers, converting those opportunities into 35 points off turnovers.
With the victory, Gannon improved to 29 wins on the season, tying for the fourth-most wins in program history.
