ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's basketball team earned a 93-58 win in the final game of the 2010-11 season over Clarion Saturday evening at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights were led by seniors Julie Kleber, (Suffern, N.Y / Suffern) and Shanna Thompson (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Shaker Heights) who combined for 42 points on the night.
After an even first six minutes, Gannon exploded for a 27-7 run over the next eight minutes that gave the Lady Knights a 36-15 lead with 6:17 left in the first half. The run was sparked by stellar shooting from behind the arc with eight straight buckets for the Lady Knights came from three-point range, accounting for 24 of the 27 points.
Thompson hit back-to-back threes early in the run, followed by a three from Amanda Dacek (Berea, Ohio / Middleberg Heights) and Caitlyn Lowe (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg). Kleber then hit two threes on back-to-back possessions to cap off the long-range explosion. Dacek had three steals during the stretch while Jennifer Papich (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) had two.
MacKenzie Clark hit a three on Clarion's last shot of the half, to cut the Lady Knights' lead to 45-28 heading into the break. At the half, Kleber had already racked up 15 points and eight rebounds with two assists, in just 17 minutes of action. The Lady Knights were 9-of-15 from three-point range during the first half, with four different players pouring in long-range shots.
It was much of the same in the second half as Clarion never trailed by fewer than 20 points. The lead slowly moved to as many as 38 during the second half as Gannon shot 50 percent in the last 20 minutes.
Gannon finished shooting 48.6 percent for the game and held a 44-31 advantage in rebounds. The Lady Knights scored 22 second-chance points with 33 points off the bench. The 93 points and 23 assists are both team highs for the season.
Kleber finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in her final collegiate game as a Lady Knight. The senior dished out seven assists with three steals. She finishes the season scoring double-digit points in 11 straight games. Her 852 career points rank her 26th on Gannon's all-time scoring list. Kleber's 135 three-pointers are eighth best on Gannon's all-time list.
Thompson, also in her finale in a Gannon uniform, set a new career high in points with 22 on 7-of-9 shooting. Her four three-pointers are also a new career best. The senior forward grabbed four rebounds and two steals.
Lowe poured in 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds. Dacek also reached double-digits with 10 points, three steals and two assists. Freshman Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn. / E.O. Smith) added eight points and six assists.
The Lady Knights finish the season with a 13-13 record and a 5-9 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Clarion finishes 7-19 overall and 4-10 in conference.
