Gannon Wrestlers Use Late Run to Win 2009 Virginia Duals

A.J. Milanak won a 4-3 decision in the finals, helping Gannon win the Virginia Duals.
HAMPTON, Va. - The Gannon wrestling team beat Anderson College (S.C.) 25-10 in the finals of the 2009 Virginia Duals Saturday night. The Golden Knights won their final six matches to take the championship. 

GU fell behind early, dropping three of the first four matches in the contest. From there, the Knights took over. Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) won a 3-1 decision in the 157-pound contest and then 165-pounder Bret Terry (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) took a 5-4 decision to put Gannon down 10-9. Chris Daniels (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) won a major decision 11-3 in his 174-pound match to give his school the lead and Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) followed with a 13-0 major decision victory in the 184-pound division. 197-pounder Dave Spinelli (Erie, Pa./Tech Memorial) won 3-1 to clinch the match for the Knights. 

#A.J. Milanak# (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) won his 141-pound match in a 4-3 decision. Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) won in the heavyweight class with a technical fall. 

In the semifinals earlier Saturday, the Knights defeated Roger Williams (R.I.) 27-9. Chris Santucci (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and McGrath both earned pinfalls to lead the way, as five other Gannon wrestlers won. Anderson squeaked past Brockport (N.Y.) 19-14 in the other semifinal contest. 

Gannon will host Pitt-Johnstown Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m. in the Hammermill Center. The Knights are among others receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top 20, while UPJ is ranked 11th in the latest standings.
