Echevarria, Martinez Named Gannon Student-Athletes of the Week

ERIE, Pa. – It was a wrestling kind of weekend for Gannon. Men's wrestler Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) and women's wrestler Jaylene Martinez (Whittier, Cal./Whittier) have been selected as the Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of December 14. This marks the 15th week honoring Gannon's Student-Athlete of the Week and encompasses events through Sunday. One more week remains before the Golden Knights take a break for the holidays.
 
Echevarria led the men's wrestling team to a tie for fourth place in the prestigious Midwest Classic. The field featured 47 teams including many of the top programs in Division II. The fourth place showing is believed to be the highest ever by the Golden Knights. The 2018-19 squad placed fifth.
 
Competing at 133 lbs., the redshirt senior medaled for the third time at the Midwest Classic. This time he stood at the top of the podium winning all five of his matches to take home first place.
 
The native of Long Beach, N.Y. reached the quarterfinals with a fall and decision. In the quarterfinals he won by technical fall. Ranked seventh by The Open Mat, Echevarria met second-ranked Thaddeus Long of McKendree in the semifinals. He would prevail 3-2.
 
In the finals Echevarria edged Newman's Jevin Foust 6-5. Trailing 4-3 he posted the winning takedown with four seconds remaining.
 
Like the men's wrestling team, the women's wrestlers were competing in a strong tournament – the North Central Open. Martinez, a junior from Whittier, Cal., was Gannon's top finisher. Competing at 131 lbs. she finished as the runnerup in the B division.
 
Martinez opened with a pair of technical falls by scores of 10-0 and 12-2 to reach the semifinals. She made it three straight tech falls with a 10-0 win over Bella Sowards of Sacred Heart. Martinez would take home second place after dropping the championship match to Thalia Vogelsang of Colorado Mesa.
