No. 5 Golden Knights Go 3-0 at Fairmont State Quad

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – After opening the 2025-26 season with two strong showings in open tournaments the Gannon men's wrestling team opened the dual portion of its season with three matches on Sunday in the Fairmont State Quad.

Head coach Tom Boyd's Golden Knights won all three matches. Gannon climbed to fifth in the latest NWCA Div. II Top 25 earlier in the week and celebrated with a 29-10 win over Frostburg State. That was followed by a 52-0 whitewash of Salem before defeating host Fairmont State 28-14.

The Golden Knights return to action on December 13-14 competing in the Midwest Classic hosted by the Univ. of Indianapolis.

ECHEVARRIA, WALKER MAKE DEBUTS
The day featured the 2025-26 debut in the lineup for Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), who entered the tournament ranked number one at 133 lbs. In addition, the lineup welcomed former Mercyhurst standout Dillon Walker (Mason, Ohio/Mason) at 165 lbs. in his first action in a Gannon singlet. Both went 2-1. Echevarria's first match was an 8-4 loss to No. 10 Tanner Halling of Frostburg State, but he came back with a technical fall and an decision. Walker's day began with a technical fall but he would suffer a 4-1 sudden victory loss to Josh Woyan of Fairmont State.

FIVE GOLDEN KNIGHTS STAY UNDEFEATED
Five Golden Knights entered the quad undefeated and remained that way with wins in all three of their matches. Joey Lyons (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) leads the way with a 12-0 mark at 197 lbs., while Grant Mackay is 11-0 at 165 lbs. Patrick Jackon, ranked fifth at 184 lbs., improved to 10-0. Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School), ranked seventh at 125 lbs., won three times and is now 8-0 while Jake Niffenegger (Mason, Ohio/La Salle) is 7-0 while competing at 141 lbs. The former Mercyhurst grappler is ranked eighth.

NIFFENEGGER WINS TOP 10 DUEL
Jake Niffenegger (Mason, Ohio/La Salle) squared off against Colton Stoneking in the Fairmont State dual. It was a meeting of two top-10 grapplers at 141 lbs. according to the NWCA. Niffenegger, ranked eighth, got the better of No. 5 Stoneking via a 4-1 decision.   

SAYLOR ALSO WINS THREE TIMES
Connor Saylor (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) was a fifth Golden Knights to win all three of his bouts. A redshirt sophomore who previously competed at Cleveland State, Saylor won a pair of decisions and picked up a win by forfeit.
