Echevarria Named PSAC Wrestling Co-Athlete of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Gannon's Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) has been named the PSAC Wrestling Co-Athlete of the Week. The conference announced it's weekly award winner this afternoon. Echevarria shared the award with Pitt-Johnstown's Trevon Gray.

Echevarria brought home the championship at 133 lbs. this past weekend while competing in the prestigious Midwest Classic. The redshirt senior won all five of his matches to reach the top of the podium, including a thrilling last-second win in the finals over Jevin Fouts of Newman. Gray was the champion at 125 lbs. Trailing 4-3 in the waning seconds, Echevarria recorded the winning takedown with four seconds remaining for a 6-5 victory.

The number two seed and currently ranked seventh by The Open Mat, Echevarria opened the tournament with a fall at 5:16 over Max Meredith of Shorter. That was followed by a 5-2 decision over Quincy's Te'Andre Allen  Quincy. In the quarterfinals he disposed of Zachary Parker of Glenville State by technical fall, 18-2 (6:07).

He met second-ranked Thaddeus Long of McKendree in the semifinals and came away with a narrow 3-2 win in a tiebreaker. Long, seeded third, took a 2-1 lead in the overtime period with an escape but with ten seconds left Echevarria provided the winning points with a reversal.

Echevarria improved to 7-1 following the tournament. He returns to the mat on Friday, Dec. 19 as Gannon wrestles at Division I Edinboro.
