Gannon Baseball Team Ends Season with Senior Day Doubleheader Split Against Clarion

  • The Short Story: Senior Santiago Mendez (Potterville, Mich./Lansing Eastern) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before finishing with a 6-0 one-hit victory Sunday afternoon during the opening game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader on Senior Day at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Eagles earned a split with a 7-6 eight-inning win in the nightcap.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon was off and running during the opener with two runs during its first at-bat and one more during the second inning. Redshirt sophomore Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled and junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) doubled with two outs during the first inning. Senior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) followed with a two-run single to right field.
  • Junior Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) led off the second inning with his fifth home run of the season to left field.
  • Gannon added three insurance runs during the bottom of the sixth inning. Cardy led off with his seventh home run of the campaign for a 4-0 lead. Redshirt senior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) and senior Scotty Cloudy (Parma, Ohio/Buckeye) added RBI singles as the advantage ballooned to 6-0.
  • Meanwhile, Mendez was lights off during his last career start, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The Golden Eagles did put six runners on base during the first six innings with five walks and one error.
  • Thomas Conell broke up the no-no with a lead-off single to center field during the top of the seventh inning, but was later stranded at second base before Mendez closed out a 6-0 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Seven of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.
  • The Golden Knights' three through six hitters combined to go 8-for-12 with five runs and four RBIs.
  • Restuccia went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
  • Cardy and Cox finished 2-for-3 with two runs each.
  • Grimone also recorded two hits to go along with an RBI.
  • Mendez's one-hitter completed a perfect senior season with a 3-0 record. His performance included a career-high nine strikeouts and five walks through seven innings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Sunday's doubleheader represented Gannon's final games of the season.
  • Six seniors received starting assignments as part of Senior Day.
  • Head coach Greg Coleman recorded his 50th career victory despite being in only his second year at the helm.
  • Mendez threw his second one-hitter of the season, duplicating his efforts during a 15-2 victory against Wheeling Jesuit February 26 at the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.
  • Cardy moved into sixth place all-time at Gannon with his 11th career home run, tying Steve Shubert (1990-93).
  • Mendez became the eighth Golden Knight since 2000 to win 10 career games.
  • Gannon's pitching staff tossed its second complete-game shutout in five games. Sophomore Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) two-hit Mercyhurst on April 22.
  • Mendez moved into ninth place all-time at Gannon since 2000 with 94 career strikeouts, moving past Sean Gority (2002-03).
  • Restuccia recorded his fourth multiple-RBI game and ninth multiple-hit effort of the season while extending his team-best hit streak to seven games.
  • Cox produced his team-best 13th multiple-hit performance of the campaign. 
  • Cardy recorded his 11th multiple-hit game while Grimone did so for the first time in 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Clarion scored twice during its first at-bat and held a 2-0 lead until Gannon plated three runs during the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Junior Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) tied the game with a two-run double to left field with the bases loaded. Junior Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored junior Teagan Piechnick (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) with the go-ahead run.
  • Clarion produced the tying run during the top of the sixth inning, but Gannon immediately forged back ahead with three runs during its half of the frame.
  • Colosi ignited the rally with a two-out solo home run to left field. Four pitches later, Cardy went yard for his eighth home run of the season. Three consecutive singles by Cox, freshman Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) and Restuccia capped the blitz and gave the Golden Knights a 6-3 lead.
  • However, Clarion countered with three runs during the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings. All three runs came with two outs and were unearned.
  • Gannon loaded the bases with two outs during the bottom of the seventh inning, but a ground-out created extra innings.
  • Clarion took an 8-7 lead with a single run during its eighth-inning at-bat.
  • Gannon again put a runner in scoring position during the bottom of the inning, but a strikeout ended the contest. 

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Ten Golden Knights recorded a hit, including all nine starters.
  • Oruch finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs out of the lead-off spot.
  • Cox went 2-for-5 with one run.
  • Colosi had two RBIs and one run after going 1-for-3.
  • Redshirt senior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) received a no-decision after allowing three runs on six hits through five innings. He struck out two and walked one.
  • Morrison tossed a scoreless sixth inning, striking out two of three hitters.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Sunday's second game was Gannon's season finale and part of Senior Day.
  • Cloudy, Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin), Grimone, Ryan Hancy (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta), Jackson, Mendez, Restuccia, Suppa and Andrew Wagner (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) were honored between games as part of Senior Day festivities.
  • Cardy moved into Gannon's all-time top five with his 12th career home run, tying Charlie D'Agostino (2001-04).
  • Jackson became the sixth Golden Knight since 2000 to make 40 career appearances.
  • Oruch recorded his seventh multiple-hit game of the season, including second with at least three hits.
  • Jackson moved into third place all-time at Gannon since 2000 with 37 career starts, tying Matt Tobin (2012-15).
  • Cox produced his team-best 14th multiple-hit game of the campaign.
  • Colosi generated his team-best eighth multiple-RBI performance of 2017.
  • Gannon recorded double-digit hits during both ends of a doubleheader for the fourth time this season and second consecutive twinbill.
  • Cardy finished the season with 38 runs, tying Jay Schade (1998) for the 10th-highest single-season total in program history. His .476 on-base percentage represented the third-highest single-season mark in program history.
  • Cardy's eight home runs tied Aaron Cox (2015) for second-most all-time at Gannon in a single season, finishing one behind Fran Pattonrick's record set in 1968.
  • Cardy's 14 hit by pitches tied Tim Lipp (2009) for second-highest single-season total, ending two behind Charlie D'Agostino's record set in 2002.
