Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Loses Early Leads Against Brown and Mercyhurst at CWPA Championship

Molly Andrews had four scores in Gannon's two matches on Saturday at the CWPA Championship.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Gannon women's water polo team failed to hold onto early leads against both Brown University and Mercyhurst College at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship Saturday. The Lady Knights fell to Brown by a 11-8 final and to Mercyhurst by a 16-6 score.

The Lady Knights fell in the first game of the day by an 11-8 score to Brown University. The Bears opened the scoring 24 second into the match before Colleen Harriger (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and Molly Andrews (Tustin, Calif. / Tustin) each scored to give Gannon a 2-1 lead.

Harriger added her second score of the match on a five-meter penalty shot, followed by another Brown goal to make the score 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The two teams were even in the second quarter with one score each to put the score at 4-3 at the half. Brown erased the Gannon lead in the third quarter by out-scoring the Lady Knights 4-1.

Brown added four more in the fourth quarter while the Lady Knights scored three times to win by the 11-8 final score.

Harriger and Andrews combined for seven of Gannon's eight goals with Harriger leading the way with 4. Katelyn Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill. / Lyons Township) chipped in one goal. Libbie Guina (Houston, Texas / Clear Brook) had eight blocks in goal.

Gannon fell to Mercyhurst 16-6 in the second game after the Lakers exploded for nine goals in the second quarter. The Lady Knights held a 3-0 advantage after the first quarter after shutting out Mercyhurst in the first eight minutes. However, the Lakers returned the favor in the second by posting a 9-0 advantage.

Mercyhurst out-scored Gannon 4-1 in the third quarter and 3-2 in the fourth to earn the 16-6 win.

Emily Sullivan (Wheeling, Ill. / Wheeling) and Kelly Steininger (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Vernon Hills) each scored twice while Harriger and Andrews each added one goal.

Guina had four blocks in goal and Janelle Bartman (Darien, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) had two after splitting time in goal.

The Lady Knights finish in 11th place at the CWPA Eastern Championship and conclude the season with a 9-19 overall record.
