Golden Knights Fall to Salem in Fifth Place Game at WWPA Championships

Strickland, Sebunia conclude outstanding careers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Gannon women's water polo team finished in sixth place as the Golden Knights wrapped up action in the 2025 WWPA Women's Championships.  Gannon, the third seed in the WWPA East, dropped a 17-6 decision to Salem, the second sound from the East, on Sunday morning. Salem served as the host of the championships at Mylan Parks Aquatic Center in Morgantown.

The match was the third between the two teams this season. Gannon won the first meeting 11-10 with the Tigers claiming the second 14-12.

Gannon was never able to get its attack untracked in meeting number three while ending the year at 7-15. Salem scored the first two goals before Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) found the back of the net thanks to a pass from Delaney Chrysle (Banning, Calif./Beaumont). The Tigers held a 3-1 lead after one quarter.

Strickland added a second goal on a penalty shot and Ana Carrera (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) scored off a feed from Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) in the second period as the first half ended with Salem leading 6-3.

Carrera's goal came with 2:45 remaining in the second quarter. The Golden Knights would go over 11 minutes without a goal before Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) scored a power play goal at 7:36 of the fourth quarter, assisted by Ana Carrera (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona). That closed the gap to 9-4 but Salem ran off four straight goals before Gannon again took advantage of the power play to score at the 3:53 mark. Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) accounted for the goal assisted by Ellie Velasco (Bronx, Calif./Arlington).

Velasco tallied Gannon's final goal, again on the power play, with Strickland picking up the assist with a minute remaining.
Strickland concluded a brilliant career with two goals and an assist. Fittingly the assist was the 100th of her career. She ends with 186 goals, good for seventh in the career records, and 100 assists, which ranks fifth.

BY THE NUMBERS
-- Salem held a 33-26 advantage in shots
-- Five of Gannon's six goals came on the power play, as the Golden Knights were 5-for-11 on power plays. Salem was 3-of-4.
-- Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) played the first three quarters in goal and finished with six saves. Freshman Izabella Trunzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took over in the fourth and had one save. Like Strickland, Sebunia concluded an outstanding career. She totaled 493 career saves, good for fourth all-time.
