In a consolation bracket exhibition, Gannon notched their first win of the 2025 WWPA Championships, defeating UC Merced, 16-10 on Saturday in Morgantown, WV. The Golden Knights now get set to face familiar foe Salem in the fifth place game Sunday morning at 9:00 am.
1st Period
GU gave up the first goal of the game and proceeded to immediately rattle off three unanswered.
Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) would tickle the net just 24 seconds after the first UC goal on the power play, and
Ellie Velasco (Bronx, Calif./Arlington) and
Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) made it 3-1.
Delaney Chrysle (Banning, Calif./Beaumont) tallied twice at the tail end of the period, and Gannon was up 6-3 after one.
2nd Period
Carmody and Velasco traded goals early in the frame to spot the Golden Knights a five goal lead nearing the half. Both teams would score twice more before the buzzer, and Gannon, led by two power play goals in the half, took a 9-5 lead into the locker room.
3rd Period
Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) opened the scoring in the third when she found the net off a feed from Velasco 1:04 into the period. Gannon then converted their third and final power play goal when
Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) added a tally to the scoresheet to up the lead back to five and would prove to be the game winning tally. Two additional late goals padded GU's advantage to 13-7 heading into the fourth.
4th Period
Each team tallied three times in the final eight minutes, but the result wasn't in doubt. Gannon took home the 16-10 victory in a game in which eight different players found the net.
