Strickland Scores Five Goals as Gannon Loses Tight Match to Fresno Pacific

Golden Knights lose opener in WWPA Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Gannon women's water polo team opened play in the 2025 WWPA Women's Championships with a tough 12-11 quarterfinal loss to Fresno Pacific. The loss dropped the Golden Knights into the consolation round as they are now 7-14. Fresno Pacific moves into the semifinals at 14-11.

Gannon led for most of the first half in a tight match that saw neither team lead by more than two goals.  The Golden Knights scored the first two goals of the match on goals by Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) and Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny). Gannon later held 4-2 and 5-3 margins, the latter with just under a minute to play in the first quarter on Brigid Carmody's (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) goal.

The Sunbirds outscored Gannon 4-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead at the half. They took their first lead of the match with 47 seconds remaining in the half.

Gannon knotted the score at 7-7 early in the third quarter on Molly Fehr's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) goal. Fresno Pacific scored the next two goals to go ahead 9-7 but the Golden Knights tied the match at 9-9 with four minutes left in the quarter on Claudia Orte Branch's goal.

Fresno Pacific regained the lead but Carmody's second goal made it 10-10 just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Sunbirds scored back-to-back goals and held the Golden Knights from finding the back of the net until just six seconds were left when Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) scored her fifth goal.

In addition to Strickland's five goals, Carmody had two goals and an assist and Jones had a goal and two assists.
Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) played the first half in goal totaling five saves, and freshman Izabella Trunzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was in goal for the final 16 minutes, recording six saves.

Gannon and Fresno Pacific played last year in the consolation round and lost another one-goal game.
Gannon returns to the pool on Saturday playing an exhibition game against UC Merced at 3:00 p.m.
