ERIE, Pa. – Prior to the start of the 2024-25 season Gannon men's wrestling coach Tom Boyd assembled one of the most demanding schedules the Golden Knights have ever faced. They have performed well while facing numerous nationally-ranked teams and as the regular season winds down they still have a couple of the best Division II has to offer in their path.

Gannon takes to the mat for the final time at home on Sunday, February 9. The Golden Knights host Ashland at the Highmark Events Center with the action set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles are ranked tenth in the latest The Open Mat poll and tied for 21st in the NWCA rankings. They are 9-2 in duals. They face West Liberty on Friday night. Seven of their ten wrestlers are ranked either by the NWCA or The Open Mat.

Gannon comes in with an 8-5 record after splitting a pair of PSAC duals last weekend. The Golden Knights defeated East Stroudsburg 35-12 before falling to No. 20 Kutztown 25-19. Gannon is ranked 14th according to the NWCA and 17th in The Open Mat poll.

Boyd, in his second season at the helm, has had to navigate several injuries and that likely caught up to the Golden Knights at Kutztown. They jumped out to a 19-3 lead but Kutztown rallied with wins in the final five bouts.

Gannon went into the season with starters Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (174 lbs,) and Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) (184 lbs.) out for the season. The Golden Knights were dealt a blow recently when heavyweight Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) went down. The transfer from Bucknell, a two-time NCAA Div. I national qualifier, is ranked fourth by The Open Mat and sixth by the NWCA with an 18-3 record, but he is expected to miss the Ashland dual.

Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) (10-2) joined the Gannon lineup midyear and quickly climbed to the same rankings as Crosby at 149 lbs. He has missed the last three duals but will hopefully be able to take the mat on Sunday.

Boyd can still can on three wrestlers who appear in the rankings.  A pair of transfers from Lock Haven, both redshirt freshmen, lead the way. Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School) has fashioned a 20-3 record at 125 lbs. and comes in ranked seventh by The Open Mat and 14th by the NWCA at 125 lbs. Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) has taken over at 174 lbs. and is ranked eighth by the NWCA and 15th by The Open Mat. He has a 17-6 record.

Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) is ranked ninth by the NWCA and 12th by The Open Mat at 133 lbs. The redshirt junior earned All-American honors a year ago with a fifth-place finish at 133 lbs. he comes in with an 18-3 record.

The 2024-25 regular season concludes on Friday, February 14 with Gannon traveling to Pitt-Johnstown for the final PSAC dual. The Mountain Cats are ranked eighth by The Open Mat and 18th by the NWCA.

Gannon's B Team competed at Penn State Behrend on Thursday night and came away with a 34-14 win over the Lions. The Golden Knights won five matches by bonus points. Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area), John Watson (Ashville, NY/Chautauqua Lake High) and Gaetano Savelli (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland High) won by falls at 141, 174 and 184 lbs., respectively, while Kenny Schmitz (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) (125 lbs.) and Amarfio Reynolds (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) (133 lbs.) picked up technical falls.
