Crosby Finishes Third, Echevarria Seventh at NCAA Div. II National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Gannon's two All-Americans turned in a strong showing on Saturday as the NCAA Division II National Championships wrapped up at Corteva Coliseum.

Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) ensured All-American status on Friday night. Crosby, a two-time NCAA Division I qualifier while competing at Bucknell, won all three of his matches to finish third at heavyweight. That is the highest finish by a Golden Knight since Alex Farenchak took home second place at 165 lbs. at the 2021 National Championships.

Echevarria, meanwhile, became just the tenth Golden Knight to earn All-American honors more than once.

Nebraska-Kearney finished as the national champion with a team total of 115 points. Augustana (SD) was second (83 points) and St. Cloud St. third (57.5 points). Gannon ended up 16th in the 51-team field with 31 points.

Crosby's day began with a 10-4 decision over Tyler Doyle of Colorado Mesa to reach the consolation semifinals. There he faced Jake Swiple of Minot State. The two battled into overtime exchanging escapes before Crosby recorded a takedown in sudden victory for a 4-1 decision.

Crosby squared off against top-seeded Crew Howard of Nebraska-Kearney in the third-place match. He came away with a 4-2 decision to hand Howard just his second loss of the season while finishing the year at 27-4.

Echevarria opened the day with a 5-2 loss to Sam Spencer of St. Cloud St. After a scoreless first period Spencer rode Echevarria out in the second period. He added the lone takedown of the match in the third period. Late in the period Echeverria picked up two points with a reversal but Spencer escaped and owned riding time. That left Echevarria wrestling in the seventh place match.

He would post an impressive win to claim seventh place after finishing fifth a year ago. He faced Tiffin's Max Shore. The two met in the first round and Shore dominated the match, winning by technical fall 16-1. But this time it was Echevarria gaining the upper hand with a 4-2 decision. He ended the year with a 27-6 record.
