Challenging Schedule Awaits Gannon Men's Wrestling Team in 2025-26

ERIE, Pa. – As Tom Boyd begins his third season as Gannon's men's wrestling head coach his ambition to be one of the top teams in the country is clearly evident. A year ago the Golden Knights finished with an 8-7 record and was third in the PSAC. The Golden Knights went on to finish second out of 12 teams at the NCAA Div. II Super Regional One tournament and placed 16th at the National Championships.

Successful – yes. Acceptable to Boyd – no. To that end, Boyd has assembled a schedule that features two Division I programs, three conference champions and four teams that finished in the top 13 at the National Championships to challenge his 2025-26 squad.

"We have a great schedule," Boyd stressed. "We want everyone on the team to get as many matches as possible. We will wrestle two D1 opponents -- Edinboro and Kent State -- in a dual and end the fall semester with the tough Midwest Classic. New to our dual schedule this year will be Frostburg and Emory Henry. We will come back after the Christmas break and gear up for our PSAC schedule. We will also wrestle Glenville and Ashland in duals. Our schedule should prepare us for the Regional and National Tournament. I am excited to see what this team will bring to the mat. We will be ready to go."

As Boyd mentioned, the schedule features a pair of Division I outfits in Edinboro and Kent State. Gannon and Edinboro will meet on the mat on Sunday, November 16 at Edinboro. It marks the first meeting between the two since the 2021-22 season.

That is also the last time the Golden Knights faced two Division I squads in a season. The second match is against another Mid-American Conference team, with Kent State visiting the Highmark Events Center on Thursday, December 4. It will be the third straight year the two will meet. Gannon upset the Golden Flashes two years ago before dropping a 23-15 decision a year ago. The Kent State match will be the first time Gannon hosts a Division I opponent since 2003-04 vs. Slippery Rock.

Boyd will get a first-hand look at his 2025-26 squad on Saturday, October 25 with the annual Maroon-Gold Wrestleoffs. The season officially gets underway a week later with the Golden Knights competing in back-to-back tournaments over the first two weekends in November. Gannon wrestles in the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday, November 1 and on Sunday, November 9 competes in the Ohio Intercollegiate Open hosted by Case Western Reserve.

The Edinboro dual will be the first of 15 duals on the season and will be followed by the Fairmont State Tri-Match on Sunday, November 23. The Golden Knights will wrestle three times that day. The first will be meeting with Frostburg State at 12 noon. The Bobcats were 10-4 last year and finished fifth at the Super Regional One.

Next is a match with host Fairmont State. The Falcons finished 9-11 including a 43-12 loss to Gannon a year ago. The day wraps up with a meeting with Emory & Henry, like Frostburg State a new opponent on the schedule.

Following the Kent State dual the 2025 portion of the schedule concludes with the prestigious Midwest Classic on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14. The tournament annually attracts the top Division II teams and wrestlers in the country. A year ago the Golden Knights finished 18th out of 43 teams.

Gannon rings in the New Year on Sunday, January 4 hosting Glenville State in a dual featuring two of the top teams in Division II. A year ago Glenville State edged the Golden Knights 22-21 and went on to finish at 19-6. They won the Mountain East Conference title and captured the Super Regional Three title before going on to place 12th at Nationals.

The next two weekends feature three away duals. Gannon makes the short trip to Painesville, Ohio to wrestle at Lake Erie (5-6) on Saturday, January 10. The Storm finished 24th at Nationals. Gannon claimed a 23-17 victory in last year's dual.

The Golden Knights open up PSAC action the following weekend with a pair of duals. They wrestle at Shippensburg (7-10) on Friday, January 16 then move on to face Millersville (12-7) on Saturday, January 17. A year ago Gannon defeated Shippensburg 42-5 and the Marauders 34-12.

It's back home to host the Gannon Tri-Meet on Friday, January 23 at the Highmark Events Center. After East Stroudsburg and West Liberty meet at 3:30 p.m. Gannon hosts East Stroudsburg in a PSAC dual at 5:00 p.m. The Warriors were 7-5 last year, losing to the Golden Knights 35-12.

The day concludes with another key non-conference dual against West Liberty. The Hilltoppers were 8-4 last year, handing Gannon a 24-18 defeat.

Wrestling isn't finished that weekend, with the B Team taking part in the Jamestown CC Open on Saturday, January 24.
January concludes with another home dual as Gannon hosts Kutztown in an important PSAC dual. The Golden Bears edged the Golden Knights 25-19 in last year's dual, finished third at the Super Regional One, and turned in a strong showing at Nationals, placing eighth.

The final month of the regular season gets underway with a mid-week dual at Seton Hill (7-9) on Wednesday, February 4. Gannon prevailed in last year's meeting 37-3. The B Team will wrestle a dual at Penn State Behrend two days later on Friday, February 6.

As the dual season concludes the competition ramps up as Gannon will face a pair of conference champions in the span of a week. The Golden Knights wrestle at Ashland on Sunday, February 8. The Eagles won the GMAC title for the fourth time in the last five year and went 13-2 last year, handing Gannon a 26-18 defeat. They went on to finish second at the Super Regional Three and send eight wrestlers to Nationals.

In what has become tradition for the Golden Knights the regular season concludes with the annual showdown against Pitt-Johnstown, this one at the Highmark Events Center. The Mountain Cats captured last year's PSAC crown and won the Super Regional One title then finished 13th at Nationals. They finished at 13-2, including a 22-13 win over the Golden Knights.
That same day the B Team will compete in the JCU Open hosted by John Carroll.

Gannon will look to win its second Super Regional One title in three years on Saturday, February 28. East Stroudsburg will host the regional, which will serve as the qualifier for the 2026 NCAA Division II National Championships on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14. The Nationals will take place in Sioux Falls, SD.
