Men's Soccer Game Preview: No. 13 Golden Knights Host California (Pa.) to Start Three-Game Homestand

Gannon has won the last seven matches against the Vulcans and 11 of the last 12 in a series that first began in 1989. That includes a 5-0 and 4-0 wins a year ago.

Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena) scored less than two minutes into the match but the Vulcans held Gannon without another score for over 60 minutes after that. The Golden Knights then scored three times within nine minutes to coast to the win on Senior Day.

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon begins a three-game homestand when California (Pa.) visits McConnell Family Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, October 16. The Golden Knights follow with home games against Pitt-Johnstown (Oct. 19) and Slippery Rock (Oct. 23) before finishing the regular season with four straight contests on the road.
 
Gannon climbed three spots this week to 13th in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25. The Golden Knights are an impressive 7-2-2 and riding a three-game winning streak following a 2-1 win at West Chester on Saturday and are 4-0-2 in their last six matches. But they are just 1-0-2 in the PSAC West and find themselves trailing Lock Haven by four points in the division standings.
 
California (Pa.) comes in with a 3-4-4 record and is 0-2-2 in the Western Division. The Vulcans snapped a string of five straight matches without a win on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Shippensburg.
 
Gannon and Cal will meet twice in the span of 11 days, with the Golden Knights heading to California, Pa. on October 26.
 
Gannon has now appeared in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 on three occasions. The Golden Knights opened the year ranked seventh only to drop out following a loss to Saginaw Vally State. They reappeared in 13th place for a week only to suffer a loss to Adelphi. They climbed back into the rankings in 15th place two weeks ago and were 16th last week.
 
Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway/) leads the Golden Knights with six goals and three assists for 15 points. He scored five of the goals in the first four matches and snapped a string of five straight matches without a goal with a goal at West Virginia Wesleyan. Sverre Orten sits at 13 points on four goals and five assists. Rafa Hyde adds six goals while Herman Aanberg leads Division II with nine assists.
 
Andre Moraes has been in goal for ten of Gannon's 11 games. The transfer from CSU Bakersfield is 6-2-2 with four shutouts and a 1.00 GAA.
 
CORTI NAMED PSAC WEST DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Gannon's Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000) was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday. The senior defender from Argentina played outstanding defense as Gannon posted wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and West Chester, allowing one goal in the two matches. He also contributed the game-winning goal in the 2-0 win at West Chester. It's the fourth time in his career that Corti has been named the Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Scouting California (Pa.): The Vulcans come in with a 3-4-4 overall record and are 0-2-2 in PSAC West action. They snapped a winless streak of five matches with a 1-0 win at Shippensburg on Saturday, although three of the previous matches ended in ties. Jacob Gretz accounted for the only goal in the match in the 54th minute, his first goal of the season. Kiernan Webb picked up the shutout in goal, recording three saves. California (Pa.) has scored just nine goals this season, but only allowed 11 goals. Brady Olsen and Max Llado lead the Vulcans with two goals apiece. Webb shows an impressive 0.94 GAA with two shutouts.
