Delorenzi Tied for First Place after 36 Holes at PSAC Championships

Gannon tied for third after two days

LEBANON, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team enters the final day of competition tied for third place after two days of competition at the 2023 PSAC Men's Golf Championships. The Golden Knights trail Indiana (Pa.) by five strokes after 18 holes at Iron Valley Golf Club, but they would finish the second day of play 12 strokes behind the Crimson Hawks and Millersville.

IUP, in search of a fifth straight PSAC title, and Millersville are tied for first with a 36-hole total of 608 (+32). Gannon and Pitt-Johnstown are tied for third at 620 (+44). Ten teams are competing in the three-day, 54-hole championship.

Gannon is in search of its first PSAC championship after finishing second the last two years to IUP. The Golden Knights shot an aggregate score of 307 the first day but came in 313 on Saturday for a 620 total. Only two players were able to find their way into the 70's on Saturday as scores were higher on day two.

The good news for head coach Dustin Coleman's team is Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) remains in the lead after 36 holes. The sophomore from Italy had an opening-day 72 to hold a one-stroke lead, the only player at par or better. On Saturday he shot a 73 for a 145 total (+1). He is tied with Millersville's Timothy Peters, who shot a 72 on Saturday after opening with a 73. Like Delorenzi on Friday, Peters was the only golfer to manage par on the day. The duo holds a four-shot lead over IUP's Shaun Fedor who is at 149 (+5).

Delorenzi opened his round with birdies on the second and third holes and went out at one-under 35. While he was two-over on the back nine for a 38, he remained a par machine with 13 pars.

Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) dropped from a tie for eighth place to a tie for 14th after shooting an 80 on the second day as he was done in by a tough back nine. Freshman Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) is battling back issues and shot an 81 after an opening round 80 for a 161 total (+17).

Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and freshman Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) round out the Gannon linksters, with the duo tied for 29th. Ruppert was the only other Golden Knight to shoot under 80 after finishing with a 79 for 163 total (+19), climbing eight spots in the standings. Wolak came in at 84 and is also at 163.

The ten teams and 49 golfers return to Iron Valley Golf Club for the final 18 holes on Sunday when the 2023 PSAC champion will be crowned.
