Women's golf team concludes fall season with dominant win at Clarion Invitational

Sarah White wins individual title as Gannon has 6 of the top 7 finishers in fall finale

BROOKVILLE, PA – The Clarion Invitational was an almost ideal way for the Gannon women's golf team to finish its fall season.

As a team, Gannon claimed a lopsided victory in the two-day, six-team tournament.

As individuals, the Golden Knights had the champion in junior Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and claimed each of the top four spots along with six of the top seven positions.

In addition to the wins, coach Scott Stano's team likely built some confidence going into the more important spring season when the PSAC Championships, NCAA Regionals and NCAA Division II Championships are scheduled.

Gannon finished with a 40-over-par total of 616 after shooting 20-over 308 on each day. Mercyhurst placed second, 60 shots behind GU as the Golden Knights added 33 shots to their 27-stroke, first-round lead. PSAC members Millersville, West Chester, Kutztown, and Clarion also participated.

White won her second tourney title of the fall season even though she trailed teammate Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) as both went into their 36th and final hole. White sank a birdie on No. 18 and Maestro bogeyed No. 16, her finishing hole.

White closed the tournament at 7-over 151 with a 74 on Sunday and a 77 on Monday.

Maestro shot the low round of the day -- a 1-over-par 73 – and finished at 8-over 152. Her round Monday was 4 shots better than any other golfer in cold, windy conditions.

Gannon's Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) (77-79-156) and Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) (78-79-157) finished third and fourth, respectively. Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) took sixth place (85-79-164) and Emily Donahue (Grove City/Grove City) was seventh (88-78-166). GU's Maria Arenas (Bogota, Colombia) tied for 13th at 85-86-171.

Gannon and White both won titles in the first tournament of the fall season, Mercyhurst's Evann Parker Memorial in mid-September.
