BROOKVILLE, PA -- The Gannon women's golf team couldn't have experienced a much better start to its final tournament of the fall season.
Coach
Scott Stano's Golden Knights took a huge, 27-stroke lead and had the top four finishers on Sunday in the first round of the Clarion Fall Invitational at Pinecrest Country Club.
Gannon junior
Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) shot a 2-over-par 74 to take a three-stroke lead after the first day of the two-day, six-team tourney. Gannon finished with 20-over-par 308 total to take a commanding lead over second-place Mercyhurst, which had 335. West Chester was third at 338. Gannon's 308 team score was its best of the season.
White wasn't the only GU player who had a strong first round.
Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) was in second place at 5-over 77,
Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) was in third with a 78 and and
Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) was in fourth with a 79. Gannon had the only four players who broke 80 in the 38-player field.
Gannon's
Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Maria Arenas (Bogota, Colombia) each shot 85, while
Emily Donahue (Grove City/Grove City) carded an 88.
White birdied the par-5 13th hole and had only three bogeys in her round. Martinez and Petersen recorded three birdies.
The tournament concludes on Monday with 18 more holes as the Golden Knights look to secure their second tourney win of the fall season. They won the season-opening tournament, Mercyhurst's Evann Parker Memorial.
