Gannon men's golf team places 2nd in PSAC Championships as IUP claims title

Senior Abe Holmes places 2nd in individual standings for 2nd straight year

LEBANON, PA – The Gannon men's golf team made an early surge but never could catch Indiana on Sunday in the PSAC Championships.

Coach Dustin Coleman's Golden Knights cut IUP's 10-stroke lead to six shots early in Sunday's final round before the Crimson Hawks steadily pulled away for their fourth consecutive PSAC team championship and their conference-record 32nd title overall.

IUP shot a 295 Sunday and closed the 10-team PSAC Championships with a 16-over-par 880 total over 54 holes at Iron Valley Golf Club. Gannon shot a 300 Sunday and finished 15 shots off the lead at 895 as the Golden Knights placed second for the second consecutive season.

Gannon entered the weekend seeking its first PSAC team title. The Knights had won five consecutive team titles and five consecutive individual titles in their fall season.

IUP also claimed the individual PSAC title as Guillermo Salazar shot a 3-under-par 69 Sunday to close with a 1-over-par 217 total. He edged Gannon senior Abe Holmes (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie North Collegiate) by one shot. Holmes shot an even-par 72 on Sunday and carded a 2-over 218 total. Holmes finished as the tournament's runner-up for the second year in a row.

IUP's Shaun Fedor and Alex Swinnerton tied for third at 4-over 220, while Gannon's Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa) was fifth at 222 and teammate Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) placed sixth at 223.

Gannon's lineup was rounded out by Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy) (233) and Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) (237).

Holmes concluded a fantastic fall season with his runner-up finish. In five tournaments before this weekend, he won four tournaments and placed third in another.

The Golden Knights concluded their fall season but can look ahead to the spring season with hopes of advancing to the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Division II Championships.
