AROUND THE LEAGUE:
CLARION SERIES INFORMATION:
  • All-Time Series: Gannon leads 37-15
  • First Meeting: 1975-76: at Clarion 74, Gannon 48
  • Last Meeting: February 21, 2018: at Gannon 73, Clarion 50 | Box Score
  • How It Happened: The Lady Knights finished the last six minutes of the opening half on a 12-2 run, taking a 20-10 lead to the second quarter. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) each registered five points in the quarter. Clarion closed the gap to 15 in the fourth, but Gannon expanded it back to a 20-point edge quickly and came away with a convincing 73-50 win over the Golden Eagles.

GANNON UNIFORM NOTE:
  • Gannon will sport pink uniforms for the contest against Clarion and some players will be in different jersey numbers than the traditional home/road uniform combination. A full list of number changes is listed below:

GANNON STORYLINES/NOTES:
  • Gannon (8-9, 4-6 PSAC) returns home for a quick one-game reprieve looking to get back to the .500 mark. The game, originally set for Saturday afternoon, was rescheduled to Monday due to winter weather and a state of emergency declared by Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf.
  • Gannon will hit the road for the next two matchups on January 23 (at Mercyhurst) and January 26 (at Millersville).
  • After losing four consecutive games, the Lady Knights have reeled off two straight road wins (Seton Hill/Edinboro) and find themselves right in the thick of the PSAC West standings.
  • LaCava is by far the most efficient player in the PSAC, leading the league in field goal percentage (.674). The second-ranked player in the conference - Emma Saxton of Bloomsburg - is converting 58.8% of her field goal attempts.
  • LaCava turned in another 20-point performance and double-double effort against the Fighting Scots last Wednesday. She is the first Gannon player since Lanise Saunders to register a double-double in two straight games.
  • Working her way back from an injury that forced her to miss the first two games of 2019, precocious freshman Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) looked in total control as one of the primary facilitators of the Gannon offense last Wednesday at Edinboro. She turned in a career-high 19 points against the Fighting Scots, including 11 in the second half.
  • Gannon has found its offensive touch of late, shooting at least 45% from the floor in each of the past four outings. The Lady Knights have also held each of their past two opponents to below 33% shooting from the field.
  • Rourke has set the tone defensively for the Lady Knights this season, leading the squad in steals (22) and blocks (25). The junior guard has contributed in all areas this season and logged over 35 minutes in each of the last six games. In addition to 11 points, Rourke tied season-highs in blocks (4) and steals (3) against the Fighting Scots.
  • Obenrader is shooting 62.5% (10-of-16) from the floor in the last three games, averaging 10 points/game over that span. She continues to lead the team in overall rebounding (118) and rebounds/game (6.9).
  • Gannon has a +98 rebounding margin (356-258) over opponents in its eight wins this season. Including last Wednesday against the Fighting Scots, Gannon has out-rebounded an opponent as a team by 10 or more five times this season. The Lady Knights are third in the PSAC in defensive rebounding (32.8) and second in overall rebounding margin (+5.4).
  • Head coach Jim Brunelli is one victory shy of 100 career wins at the helm of the Lady Knights. Brunelli played for the Clarion men's basketball team for one season and earned his bachelor's degree (education) from the school in 1996. He also served as a graduate assistant at Clarion from 1998-2000.

SCOUTING CLARION:
  • Clarion (7-9, 1-8 PSAC) enters Saturday's matchup trending in the wrong direction, losing each of its past six games. The Golden Eagles have been competitive, including a narrow 62-60 home loss to Mercyhurst on January 12.
  • The Golden Eagles dropped an 81-61 road decision last time out against Slippery Rock.
  • Kadijah Dickson (16.1 PPG, 8.0 RPG) nearly averages a double-double and leads the team in scoring. She has posted double figures in all but two games this season.
  • The Golden Eagles take care of the ball well, averaging 16.9 turnovers per contest. Clarion is third in the league in turnover margin (+3.75) behind PSAC West leaders California (+10.33) and IUP (+6.64).
  • Clarion features a smaller roster and all 10 players that have seen the floor are averaging at least 10 minutes/game.
  • Dickson and Yasmin Lewis (10.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG) are the only two players on the roster to start in all 16 games this season for Clarion.
  • Head coach Jana Ashley has roamed the Clarion sidelines for five seasons. A former NCAA DII basketball player at North Alabama, Ashley spent 11 years as a Division I assistant with stints at Radford, George Mason and Iona.
  • Clarion (63.0 PPG) and Gannon (65.2 PPG) are among the lowest scoring teams in the conference, ranking among the bottom four teams in the league in offense.
  • The Golden Eagles are last in the PSAC in three-point field goal percentage (.252) and second to last in field goal percentage defense (.340).

UP NEXT:
  • Gannon travels to nearby Mercyhurst for the first of two Porreco Pride of Erie contests this season. Tipoff for the matchup between these two local rivals is slated for Wednesday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m.
