GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon scored all the runs it would need with a three-run third inning. Junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) scored the game's first run after freshman Charles Benack's (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) single to right field was followed with an error. On batter later, freshman Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) and junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) delivered RBI singles.
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead to 5-0 with single runs during the fourth and fifth innings. After two outs in the fourth, Wiesen was hit by a pitch and stole second base. He then crossed the plate on Benack's second RBI single of the afternoon.
  • Gannon needed only two hits to score again in the fifth, using a double by Aaron Cox and RBI single from senior Eric Lewandowski (Souderton, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) with one out.
  • Wheeling scored its only two runs via the unearned variety during the bottom of the sixth inning, before Gannon added an insurance run on Kyle Cox's one-out RBI double in the seventh.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Jackson was solid during his first start of the season, allowing only two unearned runs in seven innings. He scattered six hits, struck out two and walked two. It was his sixth complete game in two seasons.
  • Aaron Cox led the offensive unit with a 3-for-4 showing, compiling a career-high three hits in a game for the second time this season and fourth time in his career.
  • Benack finished 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
  • Kyle Cox went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon scored at least six runs in a game for the fourth time in the first nine games.
  • The Golden Knights and Cardinals were meeting for the first time since splitting a doubleheader in Florida on February 26, 2007.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon produced only two scoring innings, but it was more than enough to win going away.
  • The Golden Knights broke a scoreless tie with four runs during the bottom of the third inning. The first two runs came home on an error and wild pitch. The lead doubled on Aaron Cox's RBI triple and Lewandowski's RBI double with two outs.
  • Gannon added a pair of insurance runs during the sixth inning. Lewandowski led off the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by freshman Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon). Like deja vu, Oruch proceeded to steal second base and score on freshman Ross Dirienzo's (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) base hit.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Fisher was superb during his second start of the season, recording his third career complete game and second career shutout. He allowed four hits while striking out two and walking three.
  • Wiesen went 2-for-4 with one run from Gannon's lead-off position.
  • Dirienzo finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI during his second career start. He generated the first hit, run and RBI of his career.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon recorded its first doubleheader sweep since taking two from No. 22 Seton Hill on April 16, 2014.
  • The Golden Knights scored at least six runs in a game for the fifth time in the first 10 games.
  • The Gannon pitching staff has limited its opponent to two runs or less five times this season.
  • The Golden Knights are off to their best 10-game start since holding an identical 6-4 mark in 2006.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon has an off day tomorrow, before continuing its week-long stay at the Russ-Matt Invitational Friday, March 6 with a doubleheader against Ashland. The twinbill is scheduled for 10 a.m.
  • The Eagles swept four games from the Golden Knights at last year's Russ-Matt Invitational.
