GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon appeared to be fine after producing a 3-0 lead through two innings. Junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double. Two outs later, he moved to third on a single by freshman Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) and scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Cox then scored on junior brother Aaron Cox's (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) single up the middle.
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead to 3-0 one inning later. Senior Sean Sutton (Toronto, Ontario/Brebeuf College) led off with a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Similar to the first inning, Sutton scored two outs later on Wiesen's RBI single to center field.
  • Ashland drew within one after scoring a pair of runs during the third inning.
  • The Eagles later won the game by returning Gannon's two-out lightning in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Ashland repeated a stolen base and RBI single twice to take a 4-3 lead.
  • Gannon stranded a runner on second base in the bottom of the sixth inning and went down in order during its last at-bat.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Wiesen accounted for half of Gannon's hits with a 2-for-4 showing, one run and one RBI.
  • The Cox brothers picked up the team's other two hits.
  • Aaron Cox's suffered his first loss in three decisions, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked three.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Cox's scoreless streak to begin the season ended at 17 1/3 innings.
  • Wiesen recorded his team-best fifth multiple-hit performance during the first 11 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Ashland methodically stretched its lead against Gannon with a single run in the second inning, one more in the fourth, two in the fifth and two insurance runs in the sixth.
  • Eagles' starter Art Warren took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, before redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out double to left field.  However, Warren kept the shutout alive with back-to-back strikeouts.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • In addition to Bellanca's double, the Golden Knights worked five walks out of two Ashland pitchers. Freshman Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) drew a pair of free passes. Wiesen, freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and Kyle Cox also reached first via a walk.
  • Senior Matt Tobin (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) went the distance on the mound, allowing four earned runs out of the six total. He struck out three and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tobin recorded his first complete game of the season and 12th of his career.
  • Gannon and Ashland were previously conference foes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) until the Golden Knights joined the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in 2008.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes its week-long stay at the Russ-Matt Invitational Saturday, March 7 with a doubleheader against St. Joseph's (Ind.). The twinbill is scheduled for 9 a.m.
  • The two programs haven't met since at least the 2000 season.
