ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon swim teams produced eight individual champions and two relay team titles while taking two of three against California (Pa.) and Le Moyne Saturday afternoon at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. In addition, 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times and two NCAA “B” cut times were met.
The Gannon men's team defeated Le Moyne 108-70 to remain undefeated. Meanwhile, the women's squad out-swam Le Moyne 76-28, but fell to California (Pa.) 50-45.
Gannon continued its early-season dominance on the men's side. Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led the way as a double-winner, touching the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.62) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.89). Both times met PSAC standards.
The 200-yard medley relay team kicked Saturday's action off with a first-place finish. Mike Decsey (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale), Jared Griffard (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene),
Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Mike Kneidinger (Erie, Pa./McDowell) completed the event in one minute and 39.76 seconds.
Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) joined Chrzanowski with a pair of PSAC-qualifying times. The freshman posted the marks with a first-place swim in the 50-yard freestyle (22.24) and a runner-up finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.32).
Chase and Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African College) also secured PSAC times during gold-medal swims. Chase won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.85 seconds. Dovale posted a conference time while winning the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.65).
The men's winner circle was completed with Terrance Coughran's (Atwater, Calif./Atwater) victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.21) and Logan Bissell's (Yorktown, Va./York) title in the 200-yard IM (2:01.69). A final PSAC-qualifying time was set by Griffard in the 200-yard breaststroke's prelims with a time of two minutes and 14.46 seconds. He did not swim in the finals.
The women's team only had one individual and one relay champion, but 10 PSAC-qualifying times were met.
Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) was the lone champion, out-swimming the competition in the 200-yard backstroke with a conference-qualifying mark of two minutes and 9.12 seconds. The freshman also met conference standards with a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:13.53) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.75).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team produced the women's second title.
Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald),
Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny),
Jacqueline Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) teamed up for a time of three minutes and 39.12 seconds.
Joseph also had a tremendous individual day despite not winning an event. The freshman recorded a pair of NCAA “B” cut times as a runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.76) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.71).
Other women's swimmers to record PSAC-qualifying times included
Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) in the 200-yard IM (4th place, 2:15.04), Graham in the 200-yard butterfly (2nd, 2:15.68),
Colleen Harriger (Erie, Pa./McDowell) in the 200-yard butterfly (4th, 2:16.89), Rzymek in the 100-yard freestyle (3rd, 55.64) and
Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2nd, 2:26.17). Rzymek had an even better time in the 100-yard freestyle prelims with a mark of 54.17 seconds.
The Gannon men's team remained undefeated at 3-0 while the Le Moyne men's squad dropped to 0-2. The Gannon women's team is now 3-2 while California (Pa.) moved to 2-0 and Le Moyne remained winless at 0-3.
Both Gannon swimming and diving teams return to action return to action Friday, November 11 against Allegheny at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The dual meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Following Friday's match-up against Allegheny, Gannon will only have one more home event the rest of the season.
