INDIANA, Pa. - The Gannon swim team won six events and recorded another 19 more Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times en route to four victories Saturday night at the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational.
The women's team defeated Bloomsburg (221-154) and Shippensburg (210-146), but fell to Indiana (Pa.) (253-115). The men's squad beat Bloomsburg (204-127) and Shippensburg (195-151), before falling to IUP (226-151).
Mitchel Meighen (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was a double-winner as the men's team won five events during Saturday's two sessions. The senior captured first place in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.95) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.80) for the second consecutive week. He did the same thing last week at a tri-meet with Edinboro and Clarion. Meighen has won the 100-yard breaststroke four times and the 200-yard breaststroke twice this season.
Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif./Atwater) earned Gannon's other individual male title, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle for the second time this season. The freshman kicked off Saturday's action with a time of 10 minutes and 11.03 seconds, posting a PSAC-qualifying time in the 1,000 free for the third time. He later placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of one minute and 49.7 seconds. It marked the fourth time this season he earned a conference-qualifying time in that event.
The men's team captured two more victories in the 400-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relays. Coughran,
Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep),
Daniel Hodson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and
Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African Collage) combined to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in three minutes and 15.03 seconds.
The 200-yard medley relay team of
Kyle Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Meighen, Chase and Hodson opened the third session by touching the wall first in one minute and 38.68 seconds.
Jared Griffard (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) had a stellar day, securing three top-four finishes and two PSAC times. The junior placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.67) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.55) while finishing fourth in the 400-yard IM (4:29.51). He met conference times in the 200-yard breaststroke for the fifth time and the 400-yard IM for the third time.
Other PSAC times on the men's side were recorded by Hodson (100-yard backstroke, 55.10),
Luke Curtis (Adelaide, South Australia/Blackfriars Priory) (200-yard butterfly, 2:02.63), Dovale (200-yard butterfly, 2:02.72), Chase (100-yard butterfly, 53.90) and
Brandon Bricarell (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods) (400-yard IM, 4:29.98). Curtis' performance in the 200 fly was his first qualifying time in that event this season.
Top-three finishes for the Golden Knights were rounded out by Hodson's bronze medal in the 100-yard freestyle (49.55) and the 800-yard freestyle relay team's second-place time (7:19.82).
Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was the lone victor on the women's side during the last two sessions on Saturday. The sophomore won the 100-yard butterfly for the second time this season, ending with a time of 59.78 seconds. It was the sixth time she posted a conference-qualifying time in the 100 fly. In addition, Rzymek added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (55.46).
The Lady Knights captured 10 other top-three finishes.
Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) placed second in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.14, PSAC time) and the 400-yard IM (4:51.36, PSAC time).
Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (54.66, PSAC time) and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.24, season-best).
Rachel King (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.24, PSAC time) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.89, PSAC time).
Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) touched the wall second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a PSAC-qualifying time of two minutes and 32.85 seconds.
Charlene Lichota (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 11 minutes and 9.17 seconds.
Two female relay teams had top-three finishes. The 400-yard medley team of Rzymek,
Sarah Lawton (Franklin, Pa./Franklin),
Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and Bosy placed second with a time of three minutes and 42.88 seconds.
Lawton, Bosy, Graham and Rzymek combined to finish third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of one minute and 53.66 seconds. Finally,
Christina Ruggiero (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) recorded Gannon's last conference-qualifying time of the day with a 2:02.32 mark in the 200-yard freestyle. It was the second time she met the mark this season.
The Gannon women's team finished the regular season with an 8-5 dual-meet record while the men's squad moved to 5-6. Both teams return to action Thursday, February 17 through Sunday, February 20 at the PSAC Championships.
