Gannon Swimmers Record 26 PSAC Qualifying Marks While Posting Three Victories Against Division I Schools

Senior Mitchel Meighen was one of nine Gannon swimmers to record at least two PSAC qualifying times Friday night at the Cleveland State Invitational.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Gannon swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2010-11 season in grand fashion Friday night, posting three victories against NCAA Division I schools and recording 26 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying marks at the Cleveland State Invitational.

The women's squad split four dual match-ups, defeating Niagara 199-101 and Butler 226-60. The Lady Knights fell to host Cleveland State (223-77) and St. Francis (Pa.) (203-85).

Meanwhile, the men's team split two battles. The Golden Knights rallied for a last-race 160-139 victory against Niagara, but dropped a 218-78 decision to Cleveland State.

Individually, opening night was a tremendous success as 26 PSAC qualifying marks were immediately met. Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmuas), Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary), Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) headlined the women's effort with a pair of PSAC qualifying times each.

Vincent accomplished the feat in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.53) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.17). She finished second in the 200 breaststroke and third in the 100 breaststroke. Bosy had PSAC qualifying times in the 50 freestyle (25.08) and the 100 freestyle (54.96). Rzymek and Graham both beat the clock in the 100 fly and 200 fly. Rzymek produced times of 59.21 and 2:14.63. Graham secured times of 1:00.99 and 2:14.58.

Luke Curtis (Adelaide, South Australia/Blackfriars Priory) led the way on the men's side with three qualifying times. The true freshman reached the plateau in the 1000 freestyle (9:55.04), the 200 backstroke (1:59.87) and the 500 freestyle (4:47.91).

Daniel Hodson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), Mitchel Meighen (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Jared Griffard (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) and Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif./Atwater) posted two qualiftying times each.

Hodson qualified in the 100 backstroke (54.95) and the 50 freestyle (22.32). Meighen and Griffard both made the mark in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. Meighen recorded times of 1:01.21 and 2:14.30. Griffard had times of 1:02.14 and 2:17.28. The duo finished second and third in both events. Coughran met PSAC standards in the 1000 freestyle (10:02.67) and the 500 freestyle (4:53.21).

Other Gannon swimmers to record PSAC qualifying times included Regina LaRosa (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) in the 1000 freestyle (11:01.82), James Lilly (Bowie, Md./Bowie) in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.53), Marc Krolikiewicz (Elmhurst, Ill./York) in the 1000 freestyle (10:14.26), Sarah Lawton (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) in the 100 backstroke (1:01.65), Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the 100 fly (53.84), Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African Collage) in the 200 fly (2:03.72) and Tytus Kwiatkowski (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) in the 50 freestyle (22.49).

Diana Rocco (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) placed second in the one-meter diving event (210.10) and fourth in the three-meter dive (206.47). Megan Beresford (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) finished third in the three-meter dive (212.85).

In all, the women's and men's teams combined to record eight second-place finishes and 10 third-place finishes. Curtis took home three top-three honors. He placed second in the 1000 freestyle and 200 backstroke while ending third in the 500 freestyle.

Hodson was second in the 100 backstroke, Coughran hit the wall third in the 1000 freestyle and Rzymek was third in the 100 fly.

Both 200-medley and 200-freestyle relay teams finished third. The 200-medley women's team of Lawton, Vincent, Rzymek and Bosy produced a time of 1:51.31. The 200 medley men's squad of Hodson, Meighen, Chase and Dovale had a time of 1:39.18. The 200-freestyle women's team of Rzymek, Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), Graham and Bosy finished in 1:40.50. The 200-freestyle men's squad of Kwiatkowski, Dovale, Chase and Hodson recorded a time of 1:28.00.

The men's dual meet against Niagara finished in unbelievable fashion. The Golden Knights trailed heading into the final race of the night. But the 200-yard freestyle relay team placed second with a time of one minute and 28 seconds. The team beat Niagara by 0.62 second to capture the team victory.
