Gannon Rolls Past Edinboro in Rivals' First-Ever Women's Lacrosse Match-Up

Junior Taryn Millerd tallied six goals during Monday's 22-1 victory over Edinboro.
ERIE, Pa. (March 23, 2009) – It may take a while before a true rivalry develops between Edinboro and Gannon in women's lacrosse. The Fighting Scots, in their first year of existence, were no match for ninth-ranked Gannon on Monday afternoon, suffering a 22-1 loss at Gannon University Field. Edinboro is now 3-4, while the Lady Knights improved to 5-2.

Gannon's Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) scored the first of her five goals just 13 seconds into the match and never looked back. The Lady Knights held a 6-0 lead just five minutes into the match as Eshenour beat Boro goalkeeper Erin Balcerzak three times in that period.

The Lady Knights would run off the first 21 goals of the match before Edinboro's Jolene Quinta scored to avert a shutout with seven minutes left in the match. Gannon led 14-0 at the half. All told, Gannon had 33 shots compared to Edinboro's four.

Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) led Gannon with six goals and was credited with two assists, while Eshenour and Colleen Dixon (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) added five goals each. Dixon also had three assists. Krista Schunk (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls) contributed three goals and an assist, with Dana Rousseau (Easton, Md./Easton) (1 goal and 4 assists), Rachel DerCola (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) (1 goal, 2 assists) and Madeline Farchione (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) (1 goal) also scored goals. Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) had six assists.

Gannon improved to 5-2 with its third consecutive victory. The Lady Knights return to action Thursday, March 26 at Slippery Rock. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
