ERIE, Pa.-The Gannon wrestling team beat #17 Ashland 25-9 Thursday night at the Hammermill Center. Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) recorded a pin in the 184-pound bout to lead the Golden Knights.
AU took an early lead, as Brandon Davis won his 125-pound match in a 3-1 decision. From there, however, the Knights controlled, winning the next four contests and maintaining the lead for the rest of the dual. In the 133-pound match, Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area) took a 6-2 decision to tie the meet. #A.J. Milanak# (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) won a 9-6 decision in the 141-pound competition and then 149-pounder Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) beat Tommy Grazl 7-5 to put GU ahead 9-3.
Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) gave Gannon (5-2) a 12-3 advantage with a 3-0 victory in the 157-pound match. After an Ashland (2-8) win, Gannon bounced back with a 15-6 victory by Chris Daniels (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) in the 174-pound match. Tazzi pinned Justin Ferguson at the 2-minute mark to put the Knights ahead 22-6. Heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) took an 8-2 decision in the final match of the night to make the final margin.
Gannon, which is among others receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top 20 this week, will compete at Mercyhurst Saturday, February 7. The Knights will take on American International at 11 a.m. and then face Kutztown at 1 p.m.
