ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's basketball team, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, hit its first eight shots and 19 of its first 23 en route to an easy 101-75 victory over a previously 7-1 Daemen (N.Y. ) squad Saturday night in the 25th annual Gary Miller Classic title game. In the consolation game, Goshen (Ind.) earned a 91-83 victory over Lake Erie.
Gannon wasted little time putting a third consecutive Gary Miller Classic title on the award shelf, jumping out to a 17-7 lead after burying its first eight shots. Tournament MVP
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) converted the first three shots of the game.
Daemen played even for the next six minutes, before Gannon put together the decision run.
Dave Wilson (Vidalia, La./Vidalia) capped an 8-0 run with a thunderous left-handed dunk off a fast break. In all, the Golden Knights concluded the half with a 21-6 run over the final seven minutes and 32 seconds.
Gannon shot 69.7 percent (23-33) en route to the 54-29 halftime advantage. The Golden Knights hit 3-of-4 three-pointers and out-rebounded Daemen 21-7 in the first 20 minutes.
The home squad increased its lead to as many as 32 points in the second half and settled for a 101-75 victory. It was Gannon's first 100-point performance since a 126-50 victory over Penn State Greater Allegheny in the 2007-08 season opener.
Goldcamp led all players with his second double-double in three games, posting 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom), who also landed a spot on the all-tournament team, matched Goldcamp with 18 markers. Howard scored 33 points in two games, hitting 13-of-14 shots.
Cory Knight (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was also named to the all-tournament team after recording 22 points, 14 assists, and six rebounds in two games off the bench. Six Golden Knights reached double digits in scoring Saturday night.
George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) scored 14 points,
Alfonso Scandrett (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) had 12 points, while Wilson netted 11 points.
Gannon shot 60.7 percent (37-61) from the field, 36.4 percent (4-11) from three-point range, and 65.7 percent (23-35) from the free throw line.
D.J. Johnson landed a spot on the all-tournament team after leading Daemen with 18 points. Ryan Henry added 17 points. Goshen's Errick McCollum completed the all-tournament team.
Daemen shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-15) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (18-27) from the charity stripe.
Gannon remained undefeated at 3-0 with its third consecutive lopsided victory. Daemen dropped to 7-2. The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, December 3 against Allegheny. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
