History was made on Sunday as head coach Easton Bazzoli and the Gannon men's basketball team captured the NCAA Division II National Championship with an 84-61 victory over Lander. The win secured the first national championship in program history and the first team national title in Gannon Athletics history.
Next, Gannon Athletics continues its busy week as the competitive cheer and dance teams travel to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete at the NCA & NDA Collegiate Nationals from April 8–11. The Golden Knights will be represented in hip-hop, team performance, and game day as they take the national stage. Meanwhile, the women's water polo team heads to Irvine, California for the WWPA Championships, hosted by Biola. The Golden Knights will open tournament play on Friday, April 10 against Cal State Monterey Bay at 11:00 AM Pacific Time (2:00 PM Eastern).
Baseball
After earning a PSAC West series sweep over California (Pa.), head coach DJ Cannon's Golden Knights return to action this week with a non-conference matchup at D'Youville before hosting Slippery Rock for a key conference series.
Gannon will host The Rock for a doubleheader on Friday, April 10 at McConnell Family Stadium before traveling to Slippery Rock for additional PSAC West action over the weekend.
Congratulations to closer Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel), who set the program record for career saves with nine after collecting two saves during the California (Pa.) series.
Softball
Gannon returns to action on Wednesday, April 8, hosting Point Park for a non-conference doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium.
The Golden Knights will then shift back into PSAC West play with a road doubleheader at Clarion on Friday, April 10. Gannon will wrap up the week with a conference doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Saturday.
Women's Lacrosse
The Golden Knights welcome No. 8 Slippery Rock to McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday, April 11.
The matchup features two NCAA semifinalists from a season ago. In the first meeting this season, Slippery Rock defeated Gannon, 24-2. The Golden Knights will look to respond on their home field in a key PSAC contest.
Acrobatics & Tumbling
Gannon wraps up its regular season on Thursday, April 9 with a road meet at Canisius.
After holding the No. 7 spot in the national rankings for a second straight week, head coach Addy Womeldorph's Golden Knights will look to maintain their position. The top eight teams qualify for the NCATA National Championships, hosted by Azusa Pacific.
Women's Water Polo
Gannon travels to Irvine, California for the WWPA Championships, hosted by Biola.
The Golden Knights earned the No. 2 seed in the East and have been led offensively this season by Maria Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/Jesuïtes Grà cia Col·legi Kostka), who paces the team with 60 goals and 82 total points, while Claudia Orte Blanch (Madrid, Spain/IES Profesor Maximo Trueba) (30 goals) and Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) (28 goals) have provided additional scoring support.
Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) (21 goals, 16 assists) and Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) (22 goals, 11 assists) have added balanced production, while Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) has been one of the team's most efficient scorers. In goal, Izabella Trunzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) has handled the majority of the workload this season, anchoring the defense heading into postseason play.
The Golden Knights will open tournament play on Friday, April 10 against Cal State Monterey Bay, with semifinal action set for Saturday and the championship scheduled for Sunday.
