Gannon Tied for Second after 18 Holes at NCAA Div. II Atlantic/East Regional

Seppanen in a tie for fourth after shooting 72

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team sits in a tie for second place following the first day of competition at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional. The Golden Knights are the defending regional champions and are hosting the event this year at Whispering Woods Golf Club.

A total of 20 teams were selected to participate in the regional which will determine who moves on to the NCAA Division II National Championships. That includes ten teams from the Atlantic Region and ten from the East Region. Gannon is seeking its fourth trip to Nationals in the last five years.

Davis & Elkins finished with an impressive 6-over par 294 total on Thursday's opening 18 holes. The Senators were buoyed by a 4-under par 68 by Aiden Talent. That is good for a two-stroke lead over Nolan Skaggs of St. Thomas Aquinas in the individual standings.

D&E holds a five-stroke lead over Gannon and California (Pa.). Both teams turned in a strong 11-over 299 on a chilly and windy day. A pair of Golden Knights are in the top ten, led by Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium). The redshirt sophomore from Sweden ended the day with an even-par 72, good for a tie for fourth place.

Seppanen's round included six birdies, four of those in a stretch of five holes on the front nine. He birdied the par-5 third hole, then following a bogey on the fourth hole, ran off three straight birdies. That included the par-5 seventh hole. He ended up with birdies on all four par-5's on the course.

Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) is in a tie for seventh place after shooting a 1-over par 73. The sophomore made the turn at 2-under 34 thanks seven pars and birdies on the seventh and ninth holes. He remained at 2-under through 16 holes before playing the final two holes in 3-over par.

The teams will return to Whispering Woods Golf Club on Friday for the second 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The first tee times are 7:30 a.m. with Gannon's golfers beginning play at 8:20 a.m.
