Golden Knights Share First Place with Davis & Elkins after First Day of NCAA Div. II Atlantic/East Regional Preview

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team is in a tie for first place after the first day of the Atlantic/East Regional Preview. The Golden Knights and Davis & Elkins each finished with a 5-over par 293 total after 18 holes at Whispering Woods Golf Club. A total of 23 teams and 119 players are entered in the 36-hole tournament.

The players endured occasional rain and wind but pleasant temperatures and the rain made for soft greens and good scores. Two players finished under par – Pitt-Johnstown's Mario Battaglia who holds a one stroke lead following a 2-under par 70. Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) finished with a 1-under 71 while playing for the Gannon B team that is in fifth place at 10-over 298. Ruppert's round included three birdies and just two bogies.

Five Gannon golfers are in the top 10 after 18 holes including Ruppert. Matti Parrini, a member of the Gannon A team, is in a group of five golfers at even par 72, good for a tie for third place. His back nine included a stretch of three birdies in six holes.

Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) and Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), members of the Gannon A team, and Vincent Lenze (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys Area), who is on the Gannon B team, are part of a group of eight players at 1-over par 73.

Delorenzi got off to a slow start before making a huge jump thanks to an eagle three on the par-5, 525-yard 12th hole, followed by a birdie on the par-4 13th hole. Three holes later he birdied the par-4 16th hole. He finished with a 34 on the back nine.

Wareham was a bit more consistent while finishing with two birdies and three bogies for his 73. Lenze, a freshman, fired a season-best 73 with a birdie on each nine.

The Atlantic/East Regional Preview features many of the top teams from both regions and is a precursor to the upcoming NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional set for the same course on May 8-10. The golfers will be back on the course for a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
