Petersen Finishes as Medalist, Gannon Wins Cav Classic

Three Golden Knights in top ten

CANTON, Ohio – The Gannon women's golf team endured extreme playing conditions to pull away late and capture the championship in the Cav Classic hosted by Walsh on Tuesday. Gannon finished with a 36-hole total of 622 to defeat runner-up Wayne State (Mich.) by seven strokes. It was Gannon's second tournament title of the 2024-25 season.

In addition, Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) was the individual medalist with a 36-hole total of 148. She led by five strokes after the opening 18 holes and was never seriously challenged on day two. It is the senior's sixth career individual title and second this year. She previously was the medalist at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational. Petersen was one of three Golden Knights in the top ten.

Monday's opening round featured outstanding playing conditions but the nine teams playing at the Glenmoor Country Club were greeted by heavy winds, cold temperatures, rain and even hail on Tuesday.

Ditte Petersen Cav Classic While second round scores were considerably higher head coach Scott Stano's squad has become accustomed to playing under adverse conditions. The Golden Knights entered the second day with a four-stroke lead and that lead grew to eight strokes at one point before Wayne State (Mich.) closed to within three strokes. But while the weather conditions continued to deteriorate Gannon pulled away for the seven-stroke win.

After opening with a 305 total, 17-over par on day one, Gannon totaled 317, 29-over par, over the final 18 holes. That was the best total of the day among the nine teams. Wayne State totaled 320 for a 629 total.

Petersen shot a 6-over par 78 over the final 18 holes. Her round featured three birdies. The native of Denmark finished five strokes ahead of Ohio Dominican's Caroline Tragesser who came in at 153.

Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) joined Petersen with a 78 and coupled with a 76 on day one ended at 10-over par 154, good for third place. Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola) was Gannon's third player in the top ten coming in tenth. She had three birdies while finishing the day with an 80 and a 154 total, 10-over par.

With the Cav Classic championship in hand Stano's team will now turn its attention to the upcoming PSAC Championships. The Golden Knights have won five straight conference crowns. The PSAC Championships are set for Friday, April 25-Sunday, April 27 at Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown, Pa.
