Gannon, Petersen in First Place after First Round of Cav Classic

CANTON, Ohio – Some good weather went a long way for the Gannon women's golf team. Playing in excellent conditions the Golden Knights finished the first round of the Cav Classic on Monday in first place, with three players in the top ten. Nine teams are competing in the tournament hosted by Walsh at Glenmoor Country Club.

Gannon finished with a 305 total, 17-over par, four strokes ahead of Wayne State (Mich.) at 309. Ohio Dominican is third at 313.

Three Golden Knights are among the top eight individual finishers, with Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) holding a five-stroke lead in the individual standings. The senior from Denmark shot a 2-under par 70 with four birdies in her round. She birdied three of the four par-5's on the courses and closed the round out with a three on the par-4 391-yard 18^th hole.

Petersen is the only golfer in the 56-player field under par with Wayne State's Sabel Imesch and Sydney Devore of Ohio Dominican the closest competitors with 75's.

Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) is in a tie for fourth place after shooting a 4-over par 76. Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola), after finishing in a tie for second last week at the ODU NC4K Classic, is eighth with a round of 6-over par 78. Martinez' round included one birdie and Mateo had two.

The nine teams will return to Glenmoor Country Club for 18 more holes on Tuesday, with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
