Golden Knights Drop Pair of Games at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team dropped a pair of PSAC West games on Sunday afternoon to drop to 1-3 in conference play and 7-12 overall. Clarion evened its record at 9-9 while going to 3-1 in the PSAC West.

For head coach DJ Cannon it was another heartbreaking day as a young and improving team lost for the third straight time. So far the only luck the fourth-year coach has been this season has been bad.

On Sunday Cannon awoke to find that the two planned starters for the doubleheader had come down with the flu, leaving him to piece together his pitching plans. It didn't work well in the first game, as the Golden Knights lost 13-6. He received a solid pitching effort in the second game but lost 5-3 despite outhitting the Golden Eagles 10-4. A four-run first proved too much to overcome.

Gannon returns to action on Tuesday, March 25 with a nine-inning non-conference game at Walsh. They pick up with PSAC West play this weekend with a four-game set vs. California (Pa.) on Friday, March 28 and Sunday, March 30.

Game 2 – Clarion 5, Gannon 3
The Golden Knights fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, allowing a pair of unearned runs. A pair of relievers shut down the Golden Eagles after that but Gannon was unable to push across enough runs. Freshman Brady Berdine (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) relieved starter Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) in the second inning and threw two scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and two walks with a strikeout. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) followed and allowed just one run in three innings. He allowed two hits and struck out five. Trailing 4-0, Gannon scored a run in the second on Reece Colvin's (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) run-scoring double, plating Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley), who had singled. The Golden Knights closed to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) doubled with two outs to drive in both runs but the inning ended on a groundout. Gannon had a runner reach second in the fifth and sixth innings but Clarion made it 5-3 with a run in the fifth. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) opened the seventh with a walk but the next three batters were retired on fly balls. Gannon outhit Clarion 10-4. Kula was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) also had a pair of hits.
