ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team returns to action on Friday, February 28 with a doubleheader against Lake Erie. The twinbill will be played at Andrew Osborne Academy in Willoughby, Ohio. The two teams were scheduled to play a second doubleheader on Saturday but it was canceled due to a forecast for unfavorable weather.

The Golden Knights opened the season with three games at Shippensburg last weekend. With a little luck head coach DJ Cannon's squad could have opened the season with three straight wins. Instead, the Golden Knights lost the first two games in the late innings by scores of 5-4 and 8-7 in 10 innings before handing the Raiders a 5-4 defeat in the final game to finish at 1-2.

If last weekend was any indication Cannon has embarked on a full-blown youth movement with seven new starters and three freshmen playing key roles. Cannon admitted afterwards there were plenty of positives to come out of the three-game series. Most noteworthy was a solid performance at the plate, finishing with 31 hits. Cannon also though this year's squad had better team speed. The Golden Knights stole seven bases.

Lake Erie is off to a 4-5 start while facing a formidable schedule. The Storm won two of three games against 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke before losing all three games against No. 5 UIndy.

Freshman Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with a .556 batting average at Shippensburg with five hits in nine at bats. The shortstop drove in six runs. Sophomore catcher Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) hit .429 while Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) hit. 417. Soto, a redshirt junior, was a relief pitcher a year ago but is now playing designated hitter. He had three doubles. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands), a transfer from Rhode Island, has taken over at second base and hit .364 while stealing five bases.

Following the doubleheader against Lake Erie the Golden Knights head to the Sunshine State for spring break. They will play five games while competing in the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla. They open on Wednesday, March 5 vs. Davis & Elkins.
