Rekka, Wheatley Named Gannon Student-Athletes of the Week

ERIE, Pa. – Enzo Rekka (Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Gymnasium of the Catholic School Centre "Sveti Franjo"), a member of the men's soccer team, and women's basketball player Maddy Wheatley (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra) have been selected as the Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of November 30. This marks the 13th week honoring Gannon's Student-Athlete of the Week and encompasses events through Sunday.

Rekka produced one of the biggest goals in Gannon's men's soccer history on Sunday, in the process sending the Golden Knights into the Elite Eight. The freshman from Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina blasted a long shot that skipped by the Franklin Pierce goalkeeper into the back of the net to provide the winning goal in a 2-1 win.

The goal, Rekka's 10th of the season, came with just under 13 minutes remaining and Gannon went on to hold off Franklin Pierce. Head coach Billy Colton's squad now moves on to play at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, December 6 in the Elite Eight. Gannon is now 15-2-4 and has won 11 straight games.

Wheatley helped the Gannon women's basketball team win a pair of games in Hawai'i. The Golden Knights held off Saginaw Valley State 59-53 in their first game. A guard from Canberra, Australia, Wheatley was the leading scorer with 13 points, adding four rebounds and five assists. In the final 18 seconds with SVSU trailing by just two points Wheatley made four free throws and pulled down a key rebound.

Gannon then improved to 7-1 with a 54-31 win over host Hawai'I Hilo the next night. Wheatley had a team-high 10 rebounds while scoring six points and dishing out a pair of assists. She was part of a suffocating defensive effort that limited the Vulcans to 18.8 percent shooting from the floor.
