WHEELING, W.Va. – The Gannon men's golf team will shoot for a spot in the NCAA Division II Championships as the Golden Knights compete in the Atlantic/East Regional this week.
Coach
Dustin Coleman's team will tee off in the three-day regional on Thursday at Oglebay Golf Resort's Jones Course. The Golden Knights will aim for one of the five qualifying spots for the NCAA finals from the 20-team regional field, which includes 10 Atlantic Region teams and 10 East Region teams.
Gannon is the No. 3 seed from the Atlantic Region, behind only No. 1 Charleston (W.Va.) and No. 2 Indiana (Pa.). The Golden Knights missed advancing to the NCAA Championships by one shot in 2023 when they finished fourth in the regional, and the top three teams advanced. Davis & Elkins is the defending regional champion, while Fayetteville State placed second and IUP finished third.
Gannon coach Dustin Coleman talks to Michael Wareham at the 2024 Atlantic/East Region Preview.
The Knights advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2022 and 2021, when they won the Atlantic/East Regional.
"We can't wait to compete at the regional championship," said Coleman. "We work all year for this. I want these guys to experience a region championship so bad. They really deserve it. There's nothing like the feeling we experienced three years ago. This group is ready to compete and go earn one."
In Gannon's most recent tournament, the Knights placed second among 26 teams at the Atlantic/East Region Preview, which took place at the same Oglebay Golf Resort where the teams will compete this week. Charleston won that tournament, which featured 15 of the 20 teams that will participate in the Atlantic/East Regional this week.
Gannon sophomore
Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) and senior
Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa/St Stithians Boys School) tied for third in the regional preview, and junior
Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) tied for sixth.
"We saw the course a couple of weeks ago, so we know what to expect," Coleman said. "The front nine is where you can make some noise and then you just kind of hold on for the difficult back nine. Nothing we can't handle."
Delorenzi, Rama, and Wareham will be joined in the Gannon lineup by freshman
Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) and senior
Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville). Four of the five scores each day will count toward Gannon's team score. Freshman
Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) will serve as the alternate.
Delorenzi led Gannon with a fourth-place finish in the 2023 Atlantic/East Regional.
"This battle-tested group won't see anything they're not used to so I'm confident they will play well," Coleman said. "They've put in all the work so it's now time to do it."
