Golden Knights, Coleman Wrap Up Season at NCAA National Championships

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Gannon men's golf team wrapped up a highly-successful 2023-24 season on Wednesday while competing in the NCAA Division II National Championships. The Golden Knights finished in 19th place with a 54-hole total of 889 (37-over par).

The 2024 National Championships are taking place at the Orange County National Golf Club's Crooked Cat course in Winter Garden, Fla. The first three days, a total of 54 holes, featured 20 teams competing for the individual title. The top eight teams then move on to determine the team national title.

Head coach Dustin Coleman's team recently won the Atlantic/East Regional by 23 shots to earn its berth in the national championships. It marked Gannon's third appearance in the last four years, with the team missing out by a stroke a year ago.

The NCAA National Championships mark the 12th season at the helm for Coleman, and also the final one, as he plans to step down to devote time to his family. He was proud of what his final edition accomplished.

"It's not what we wanted but it was a great season nonetheless," he noted. "The boys learned what it takes to compete at the national level and they'll be stronger for it. I want to thank Ryan (Ferry) and Shaunak (Rama) for their dedication to the team as they move on after graduating.

"The team is in a great spot as I hang it up and will certainly be a force for years to come," he added. "Mike (Wareham) has developed into a great player and a leader on the team. I expect big things from him next year. Gio (Delorenzi) is endlessly dedicated to improving and I know he'll continue to better himself as he is already very good. Jacob (Wolak)stepped up very nicely at the championships and that's a sign of what's to come from him. Finally, Mattia (Parrini) was under the weather this week but gutted it out. He's a phenomenal player and the sky's the limit for him. I'm proud of all they have accomplished this year."

The Golden Knights finished with a team total of 299 (15-over par) on Wednesday after scores of 297 on Tuesday and 293 on Wednesday. All five players were within five strokes of each other on another day that featured searing heat.

Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) posted the low score of the day for Gannon with a 3-over par 74. The freshman from Italy battled illness all week and was unable to compete on the opening day. He returned to shoot a 76 on Wednesday before Thursday's 74. His round began with seven straight pars before a bogey on the eight hole. He finished with a 36 on front nine before shooting 38 coming in. His round included a birdie on the par-5 14th hole and another birdie on the final hole of the season, the par-4 18th hole.

Sophomore Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena), another native of Italy, ended as Gannon's top finisher in a tie for 55th place after a final round of 75 for a 218 total, 5-over par. He also had two birdies on his round. Delorenzi opened the tournament with a 74 before shooting 69 on Wednesday, one of the lowest rounds ever by a Gannon golfer in the NCAA championships.

Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa/St Stithians Boys School) was next in a tie for 70th place as the senior wrapped up his career with an 8-over total of 221. Rama was one of three Golden Knights to shoot 75 on Thursday. After struggling on the back nine he came back to shoot a 1-under par 35 on the back nine. Rama birdied two of his final five holes, including the par-5 14th hole. In fact, four of the five Golden Knights competing birdied the 528-yard 14th hole.

Fellow senior Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) also finished with a 4-over par 75 on his final round. Birdies on the second (par-4 485 yards) and fifth holes (par-4 441 yards) left Ferry with a 2-under 33 on the front nine.

Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) was the third Golden Knight to play all three rounds and finished in a tie for 100th place with a 17-over par total of 230. The junior shot a 78 end on the final day with two birdies.
