Crosstown Rivals Gannon, Mercyhurst Meet in Women's Lacrosse Match on Wednesday

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team will play the second of back-to-back games against local rivals on Wednesday, April 10 when they it makes the short journey to play at Mercyhurst. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at Saxon Stadium. It is the firstr of three straight road contests.

Head coach Jennifer Pawlowski's team improved to 3-7 and 1-4 in the PSAC West on Saturday with a 17-10 win over Edinboro. A day earlier Mercyhurst lost to Slippery Rock in overtime by an 8-7 score. That left the Lakers at 2-7 and 1-4 in league play.

A year ago the two rivals met in a pair of close contests with each winning in the other's home field. Gannon won the opener 10-9 when Grace Cunningham (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) scored with just under six minutes remaining. The Lakers returned the favor with a 12-10 win at McConnell Family Stadium three weeks later.

With Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) missing the Edinboro match McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) enjoyed one of the best days of her career to jump into the team lead in scoring. The senior finished with three goals and eight assists for 11 points, boosting her season totals to 17 goals and a team-leading 16 assists for 33 points. She now has 131 career goals.  

Stevens, a junior, has 24 goals and five assists for 29 points. Sophomore Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) is next in scoring with 19 goals and six assists for 25 points. Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter), a graduate transfer from Chestnut Hill, has also contributed 18 goals with three assists for 21 points. Including her four seasons at Chestnut Hill she has gone over 100 career points.

Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) has played in eight matches in goal and has a 15.03 GAA with 73 saves. She was a second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago.

Mercyhurst snapped a five-game losing streak a week ago with a 15-8 win over Edinboro before dropping the overtime match to Slippery Rock. The Lakers rely on the scoring tandem of Whitley Easton and Emma Cimino. Easton has 17 goals and 10 assists for 27 points while Cimino shows 19 goals and an assist.
