Nine of the 10 student-athletes in the Gannon men's wrestling team's lineup landed All-PSAC honors on Thursday, including first-team honorees
Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic).
Gannon placed second in the PSAC standings this season after a narrow 17-15 loss to longtime power Pitt-Johnstown in their conference dual meet. First-year head coach
Tom Boyd's team then claimed the Super Regional 1 team title with a close victory over Pitt-Johnstown as eight Golden Knights qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.
Because there is no PSAC tournament, the conference considers the entire season, particularly the Super Regional and Nationals, when selecting the all-stars.
Gannon's
Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) (125 pounds),
Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) (133),
Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) (184), and
Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) (285) were on the All-PSAC second team, while
Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) (141),
Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (149), and
Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (157) landed on the third team.
Coreno, a senior, was selected to the PSAC first team after winning the Super Regional 1 title at 165 pounds and finishing as an All-American with a sixth-place finish as Nationals. He finished with a 29-8 record.
Hivnor, a redshirt sophomore, went 20-8 this season and placed second at the Super Regional 1 at 174 pounds. He won three straight matches to reach the super regional championship before being forced to medically forfeit the title match. He then advanced to Nationals before finishing with a 20-8 record.
Diaz, a grad student, finished with a 20-7 record after placing second at Super Regional 1 and advancing to Nationals.
Echeverria, a redshirt sophomore, led Gannon with a fifth-place finish at the national tournament. He placed third at Super Regional 1 and closed with a 29-8 record while tying Coreno for the team lead in wins.
Casilio, a redshirt sophomore, posted a 23-11 record and placed second at Super Regional 1. He advanced to Nationals, where he posted one win.
Long, a senior, finished with a 22-14 record after advancing to Nationals. He placed second in Super Regional 1 and claimed one victory at the national tournament.
Chaves, a redshirt sophomore, closed the season with an 18-11 record after going 2-2 at Super Regional 1 and placing fourth at 141 pounds.
Ryan, a redshirt junior, put together a 21-8 season and placed third at Super Regional 1. He also collected a win at the national tournament.
Richner, a redshirt sophomore, closed the season with a 16-9 record. He placed second at Super Regional 1 and advanced to the national tournament, where he posted one win.
Pitt-Johnstown swept the PSAC's three major awards as national champion Jacob Ealy was the Athlete of the Year, Cooper Warshel was the Freshman of the Year, and Pat Pecora was the Coach of the Year.
