Golden Knights Jump Out to 16- Stroke Lead after One Round at the Howard “Bud” Elwell Invitational

Seppanen holds two-shot lead over teammate Delorenzi

ERIE, Pa. – With three players coming in under par the Gannon men's golf team has jumped out to a 16-stroke lead after the first day of competition at the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational. A total of eight teams and 49 players are competing in the two-day, 36-hole tournament at Whispering Woods Golf Club.

The Golden Knights are the defending champions of the Elwell Invitational, named in honor of the long-time Director of Athletics and golf coach at Gannon. They also come in having won the last two tournaments they have played in and are well on their way to a third straight tourney crown.

Gannon ended the first round of the par-72 layout with a 283 total, five-under par. Pitt-Johnstown is next with a 299 total, one stroke ahead of Millersville. The Marauders came in at 300. The Gannon B is in fourth place after shooting 298 on Monday.

The Golden Knights accumulated 18 birdies over the first round, with redshirt sophomore Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) leading the way with seven. The former transfer from Wagner fashioned a season-low 67 thanks to a 32 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine. He had a stretch of five birdies in seven holes from the third through ninth holes.

Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) sits in second place two strokes behind his teammate after shooting a 3-under 69. The junior had not one but two eagles on the day. He eagled the 519-yard, par-5 third hole and later had another three on the 525-yard, par-5 12th hole. Delorenzi added two birdies. He played the four par fives on the course in five-under par.

Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) gave Gannon three players coming in under par after finishing with a 1-under 71. His round included five birdies, four within a five-hole stretch. The sophomore is in a four-way tie for third place.

Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) are tied for 11th as each shot 4-under 76. Each had a pair of birdies.

Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) gives Gannon a fourth golfer in the top ten as the sophomore led the B Team with a 2-over 74. Wolak finished with three birdies, as did Zachary Henry (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) (77) and Vincent Lenze (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys Area) (79). Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) (78) gave Gannon a third eagle as he also had a three on the par-five third hole.
