Men's Soccer Game Preview: Big Week Begins on Wednesday with Game at Seton Hill

Gannon leads 16-2-6
Gannon has dominated the series with Seton Hill of late to build a 16-2-6 advantage in the all-time series, although the games have been tight. That includes a 2-2 tie in this year's first meeting on Sept. 28 at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights are 10-0-4 in the last 14 meetings with the Griffins. Last year Gannon won twice by shutout by scores of 3-0 and 1-0.

Gannon was forced to play short-handed for the final 35 minutes of the game and after holding a 2-1 lead the Griffins were able to finally take advantage of the man advantage in the 76th minute. Seton Hill led 1-0 at the half but the Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals in a span of four minutes early in the second half. Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) accounted for the first goal with Gonzalo Perez (Madrid, Spain/Virgen de Europa) then Gannon the lead at 54:32.

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team has run off seven straight wins following a 6-0 victory at California (Pa.) on Saturday. The Golden Knights face a critical week in their quest to repeat as Western Division champions with matches at Seton Hill and Lock Haven. They play at Seton Hill on Wednesday, October 30 at 1:00 p.m.
 
Coupled with Lock Haven's loss to Seton Hill on Saturday Gannon took over first place in the PSAC West with 17 points. Lock Haven has 15 points and Seton Hill 13. The two met on Saturday, with Seton Hill handing Lock Haven a 2-0 defeat.
 
Gannon remained 12th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25. The win over Cal boosted Gannon to 11-2-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the PSAC West. Seton hill, meanwhile, has won two straight games after losing three in a row and own a 9-4-2 record along with 4-2-1 in conference play.
 
The 2024 Gannon edition has put up some impressive numbers while showcasing balanced scoring. The Golden Knights have outscored their opponents 55-11, shutting out seven teams. They've allowed just one goal over the last five games while scoring four-or-more goals nine times.
 
Six players have scored at least five goals and eight have 10-or-more points. Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) has seven goals and 10 assists for a team-high 24 points. He was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week on Monday. A pair of freshmen – Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway) and Alander Soares (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Escola Estadual de Ensino Medio Santa Catarina) – lead Gannon in goals. Soares has scored six goals in the last four games to boost his total to 10 goals, while Lauvstad has eight goals.
 
Three Golden Knights – Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) (11), Orten (10), and James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham) (9) – rank among the national leaders in assists.
 
Gannon's defense has kept the pressure off goalkeeper Andre Moraes (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil/Colegio Singular) for the most part, but the redshirt sophomore has been up to the challenge when need be. He has a 0.79 GAA with six shutouts.

Scouting Seton Hill: After losing three straight matches Seton Hill has run off back-to-back wins, including a 2-0 win over then PSAC West leading Lock Haven on Saturday. The Griffins come in at 9-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the PSAC West, sitting in third place in the division with 13 points. Nils Heinrich, a junior midfielder who scored the game-winning goal against Lock Haven, leads the Griffins with 18 points on five goals and eight assists. Julian Marker has a team-high seven goals. Aidan Hollander (1.96 GAA) and Jonathan Leary (0.82 GAA) have split time almost evenly in goal.
