Short-Handed Golden Knights Use Goals from Orten, Perez to Tie Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon and Seton Hill battled for 90 minutes on the pitch on Saturday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium and nothing was really settled. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in a match featuring the preseason favorite in the PSAC West (Gannon) and the second pick (Seton Hill).
Gannon moved to 4-2-1 on the season while Seton Hill is now 4-1-2. The match was the Western Division opener for both teams.

The Golden Knights trailed 1-0 at the half but rallied for two goals within four minutes early in the second half. However, less than a minute after that a red card to standout defender Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000) left the Golden Knights playing a man down for the final 35 minutes.

Gannon maintained the one goal advantage until the 76th minute when the Griffins finally caught up at 2-2 with a goal. Goalkeeper Andres Moraes made sure it remained a tie game with a spectacular save with six minutes remaining, sprawling to his right to deflect the ball.

The Golden Knights will return to action on Wednesday, October 2 playing at Slippery Rock. That match gets underway at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened:
  • Seton Hill jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Tom Frank scored 15:13 into the match. The Griffins forced a turnover at midfield, followed by a long pass up the right wing, with Nils Heinrich's cross finding Frank wide open on the left side of the goal.
  • Gannon evened the score at 1-1 at 50:29 on a play similar to the Seton Hill goal. The scoring play began with a crossing pass from the far right wing to Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs), who headed the ball into the middle of the goal for his third goal of the season. Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena) and Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) were credited with assists.
  • Four minutes later at 54:32 the Golden Knights went up 2-1 thanks to Gonzalo Perez' (Madrid, Spain/Virgen de Europa) first goal of the season and second career goal. Perez headed Orten's corner kick high in the air. The ball came down among numerous players and bounced past the Seton Hill goalkeeper into the net.
  • A minute later the complexion of the match changed as Bautista Cort was awarded a red card. It left Gannon playing a man down for the final 35 minutes.
  • Seton Hill was finally able to take advantage of the man-up situation to tie the match at 2-2 at the 75:21 mark. It was Heinrich this time scoring the goal into the low left corner just inside the post thanks to a beautiful pass from James Aubrey.
By the Numbers:
  • Gannon held a slight 14-11 advantage in shots, with five on goal compared to four for the Griffins. Gannon dominated in corner kicks with 10 opposed to two for Seton Hill.
  • Andres Moraes finished with two saves in goal.
Next for the Golden Knights:
Gannon plays the second of three straight PSAC West matches on Wednesday, October 2 with a contest at Slippery Rock. The match gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
