Sophomore Mattia Parrini shot a 4-under-par 68

AUGUSTA, Mich. – Gannon sophomore Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) shot a 4-under-par 68 on Saturday while helping the GU men's golf team move into a third-place tie on the opening day of the two-day Davenport University Panther Invitational.

Parrini finished in a tie for the lead as he collected six birdies – three on the front nine and three on the back – while helping the Golden Knights finish with an even-par 288 total through the first 18 holes. Gannon trails first-place Ohio Dominican (7-under 281) by seven shots and second-place Saginaw Valley State (6-under 282) by six. GU is tied for third with host Davenport.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday with 18 holes at par-72 Bedford Valley Golf Club.

Parrini had plenty of help on Saturday. Senior Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and junior Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) each carded a 1-over-par 73 Ruppert had four birdies in his round, and Delorenzi had two. They were tied for 14th.

Coming off a win in the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational, sophomore Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) shot a 2-over 74 that featured two birdies.

Senior Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) rounded out Gannon's lineup with a 6-over 78. He had a pair of birdies on the back nine.
Playing as individuals, Gannon's Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) shot a 78, and Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) shot 82.
