Scarpino, Farnsworth Named Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Americans

Scarpino selected to second team, Farnsworth honorable mention team

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — The Don Hansen Football Committee has released the 2023 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team. The team includes a pair of Gannon players with Eric Scarpino (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) named to the second team at placekicker and Chris Farnsworth (Bristol, Pa./Milton Hershey) recognized as an honorable mention All-American.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 in 2010. Hansen started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.

Scarpino becomes a consensus All-American for the Golden Knights, as the redshirt senior from nearby Waterford, Pa. was named to every Division II All-American team. It began with his selection to The Associated Press Division II All-America Team, followed by the 2023 AFCA Division II Coaches' All-America Team, the D2CCA All-America Team, and the D2Football.com Elite 100 most recently. In all of those instances he was a first team honoree.

The left-footed kicker enjoyed one of the finest seasons ever by a Gannon placekicker and a near perfect campaign. He made 16-of-17 field goals and 26-of-26 extra points to finish as the team's leading scorer with 74 points. He made his first 15 field goal attempts before missing from 29 yards out in the season finale at Shippensburg. Later in the game he made good on a 43-yarder to break the season record for field goals made with 16 and tie the career record with 33.

Scarpino made a pair of game-winning kicks, a 32-yarder with six seconds remaining for a 31-28 win at Mercyhurst and a school-record 51-yarder as time expired for a 16-15 win at Indiana (Pa.).

He ended up leading Division II in field goal percentage and was first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in field goals made per game. He is also fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 6.7 points per game and seventh in the conference in total points scored. Scarpino concluded his career with 217 points, fourth all-time at Gannon, along with ranking second in career PATs with 118.

Farnsworth repeats as a Don Hansen Football Gazette honorable mention All-American after leading the Golden Knights in tackles for the second straight year. He previously earned a spot on the D2CCA All-Super Region 1 second team for the second straight year. The senior also became a three-time All-PSAC West honoree. He was named to the first team in 2023 and 2022 and was a second team choice in 2021.

The senior defensive back finished with a team-leading 78 tackles, including 43 solo, also a team high. He had 1.5 TFL and was sixth in the PSAC with four interceptions. He also had a team-high seven passes broken up with one fumble recovery.

Farnsworth departs ranking among Gannon's career leaders in tackles and interceptions. He is ninth in career tackles with 264, sixth in career interceptions with 11, and eighth in passes broken up with 22. Farnsworth started 37 games in his career.
