  • Records: Gannon 0-2, Saginaw Valley State 1-1
  • Location: Harvey R. Wickes Memorial Stadium (University Center, Mich.)

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley took advantage of miscues in Gannon's kicking game to hand the visiting Golden Knights a 49-28 defeat at Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Gannon is now 0-2 while SVSU evened its record at 1-1.

The meeting between two former GLIAC foes turned early in favor of the Cardinals as three of their first four scores came on a short field. That included drives of 17, 40 and 23 yards. The half ended with SVSU leading 28-7.

Gannon would battle the Cardinals on even terms in the second half with each team scoring three touchdowns. Tristen Kenan (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) led Gannon with a pair of touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. Ty Hurst (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) passed for a pair of scores and ran for a third.

THE KNIGHT CAP
  • Hurst Soars in First Start:  With Anthony Harris (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) out with an injury Clarion transfer Ty Hurst (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) turned in an impressive showing in his first start at Gannon. The redshirt sophomore completed 23-of-37 passes for 324 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He added a third touchdown on a one-yard run.
  • Golden Knights Dial Long Distance: Hurst directed touchdown drives of 75, 66, 75 and 68 yards, with two of the drives taking 12 plays.
  • Gannon Battles on Even Terms in Second Half: After a slow start Gannon played the Cardinals on even terms in the second half as each team scored three touchdowns.
  • Cardinals Outgain Golden Knights: Saginaw Valley State ended the day with 485 yards in total offense compared to 336 for Gannon. The Cardinals relied on a strong ground game totaling 287 yards rushing.
  • Gannon Unable to Get Ground Game Going:  Gannon was forced to rely on its aerial game as SVSU shut down the rushing attack. The Golden Knights totaled 12 yards rushing on 22 attempts. Tristen Kenan (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) led Gannon with 42 yards on 11 carries, adding six receptions for 45 yards. He scored a touchdown rushinga a touchdown receiving.
  • Moore Reaches Paydirt for First Time: Freshman Damario Moore (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) accounted for a pair of big plays on Saturday. The first was a 47-yard TD reception, his first career six-pointer. The second was 58-yard pass from Hurst to start Gannon's five-play, 75-yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter. Moore ended the day with three receptions for 113 yards.
  • Punting Woes Help Cardinals: Three plays in the punting game proved a huge factor for Saginaw Valley State. On Gannon's first possession a bad punt snap gave SVSU the ball at the GU17, leading to the game's first touchdown. The next punt went just 15 yards off a deflection with SVSU taking over at the 40. That led to a 14-0 lead. Gannon's fourth possession ended with a blocked punt with the Cardinals gaining possession at the GU 23. Five plays later SVSU led 28-7.
  • Faulkner Flashes Former Form: Two years ago James Faulkner (West Bloomfield Township, Mich./West Bloomfield) earned second team All-MEC honors while playing for Notre Dame (Ohio). He suffered a season-ending injury in preseason drills last year but on Saturday caught six passes for 90 yards. Last year Gannon's tight ends caught 13 passes.
